Hi ZippetyDude,

The down hike seemed a little too rocky in sections but since I'm proned to rolling over my ankles its a personal thing. I look at what I'm hiking through instead of what I'm hiking on.

A note that I fail to mention before is that as we departed the summit I noticed a hiker coming up who was moving "differently". I can't describe it any other way and that's what I mentioned to my hiking partner. When we finally reached each other I then noticed he was barefoot. A total member of the Blackfoot Tribe! Turns out he was none other than Barefoot Ted. Said he has done Whitney and the Boston Marathon barefoot. While we were chatting up walks his barefoot hiking partner. He runs lots of marathons barefooted.

The whole way down the mountain I kept telling myself "walk like Ted". In an attempt to place my feet in secure spots and not kick any rocks I watched my footing. It was the most boring 15 minutes I've ever spent.

We saw Ted again as we crossed the stream and he had on an extremely thin flat soled "Romanesqe" thong tied sandle. Seems he uses them for the trip down. As I watch him walk through the water and not over it I must say my feet were yelling at me to reconsider!

I'd love to meet Barefoot Ted sometime. He used to post on the Whitney Portal Store Board. I think some of the regulars thought he was a nut at first -- barefoot Whitney hikes are not exactly mainstream fare -- but Ted really gained a lot of respect. I know a quite a few folks who would love to meet up with him.

And, after all, Abebe Bikila won an Oympic marathon barefoot.

Howdy Walt :D

I'm so glad you enjoyed the South Fork loop 8) As you recall from our ridge hike, I have similar ankle issues with going down hill. Encountering rocky terrain makes it worse. Sometime I'll do the loop clockwise as I think the descent down would be easier on the joints.

I hiked San Bernardino Peak yesterday with Lance. Holy Cow, it was HOT!!! 68 degrees at 5 AM at the trailhead, 68 degrees at the summit, and 90 degrees at the trailhead at 12 noon. I can't even imagine what Skyline would have been like yesterday.

I think I'll head back up to San Jacinto this weekend and try one of the recommended loops.

Howdy Z :D

Hope you heal up soon -- I'm sure you're going crazy. Our mountains just aren't the same without the Z-dude. I'm glad you have a Yosimite trip coming up soon.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Yeah, too hot around here for me. I'll just head a little further North. I'm sure it will be cooler here: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapCli ... -116.76611

re: barefoot hiking--one day on my way up to Wellman's Divide, two guys who were runners zipped past me--they were barefoot. Here's the (groan) kicker--it was winter! And it was two years ago and yeah there was snow and ice--packed and hard, but plenty. Makes running over coals seem like a breeze.
