Anza Borrego Desert - Wind Caves

On Wednesday I met my daughter at Ocotilla Wells and drove to Fish Creek Wash. We hiked in about 4 or 5 miles to the Wind Caves trailhead. You can actually drive to the trailhead but we wanted to walk up the wash.

Right after we started hiking, Alison spotted some movement on a distant ridge. It looked like just a speck but we thought that it might be a bighorn sheep. Thank goodness for the zoom feature on my camera! It definitely WAS a Bighorn Sheep.

The hike up the wash was pretty flat. Eventually we came to the Wind Caves trailhead, and the trail went up the side of the hill. The wind caves are located just 1 mile from the trailhead. The sandstone rocks were riddled with caves and tunnels. We had lunch in one of the caves. My SPOT location was: 32.99077,-116.11267.

Very cool Sally! The wind caves are indeed amazing.. I spend a lot of time in that amazing desert. Have you ever checked out the mud caves? There are quite a few of them and some go hundreds of feet deep. One in particular has a surprise at the end but I won't spoil it..

Also, Mountain Palm Springs oasis, the slot canyons, the badlands, and the San Ysidro peaks/Indianhead Peak are also breath taking places.

I have seen desert foxes, epic hawk vs crows battles, mountain lion motion detector cameras, deer hooves/skulls/ribcage remnants, chuckwallas, lenticular clouds and sun spiders(AKA wind scorpions) out there, but I have not had the privilege of seeing any bighorns yet you are lucky!
