Snowcreek PCT to tram hike

Postby Ellen » Wed Nov 10, 2010 10:21 am

Howdy All :)

Would anyone like to hike the 31 mile, 11 K elevation gain from the desert (Snow Creek PCT to Fuller Ridge to San Jacinto summit to tram) in the next two weeks?

I'd like to go on the weekend as more folks are available.

I will probably start at 3 AM to allow ample time.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Howdy All :)

Based on the overwhelming  response to hiking the PCT from the desert to the San J summit and tram, I decided to be more specific on the date.

Would anyone like to hike this route on Saturday or Sunday November 20 or 21?

I envision several groups -- a fast group (Dynamic Duo, Z-dude) and slower group (myself).

Any takers? Come on y'all, just think of all those calories you'll burn off before Thanksgiving

Ellen

Hi Ellen,
I'm very interested, but also concerned about how long it would take me to do 31 miles and 11,000 ft. gain. I think I might have to start earlier than 3 AM as I don't know if I can keep up my usual uphill pace of a bit more than 2 MPH for 31 miles. Didn't someone end up bivying on the ranger's porch after last year's Snow Creek PCT trek because the tram was closed when they finished?

I would need to hike the route on Sunday the 21st (because I have to work on Saturday.)

None of my hiking guide books have the Snow Creek section of the PCT. How does that part of the trail compare to Skyline?

Snow Creek Road is 1,240 feet above sea level
Black Mountain Truck Trail is 16 miles away at just under 8,000 feet
You gain 6,760 over 16 miles with only a few steep sections
Then over the next six miles you go up to 8,700 feet on the fuller Ridge to the junction of Deer Springs Trail with just under 2,000 feet of gain, then from there it's 2.3 miles up the Deer Springs Trail to the summit and another 1,400 feet approximately, so you cover 9,564 feet of gain from the valley floor and 24.3 miles all according to the Three PCT Books, CD's and State Park Maps I have - from there it's the usual 6.1 miles to the tram by way of Wellmans Divide, less if you take the Sid Davis

There are some ups and downs in the fuller ridge area so you do gain more than what's listed above but mileage wise it's 30.4 miles to do the whole route, about 15 hours with short breaks, I made 14 last year but that was after very long break at the Fuller Ridge Campground as Hal was kind enough to support everyone with drinks and a ride out if you had hit the wall - Thanks again for that Hal :D

Compared to Skyline you gain the same amount of altitude but you do it over 24.3 miles versus 17.1 miles on Skyline all the way to the summit.

Thanks, lilbitmo. Putting it in that perspective, I'm pretty sure I can do that.

Count me in if we can do it on Sun. the 21st.

Howdy Sally :)

Howdy Lilbitmo :)

Are we going to see your smiling face? The extended weather forecast looks good -- low 50's to start.

That's an impressive hike to do in a day. I wish I could. My right hip flexor was killing me on Tuesday just from doing Devils Slide to the summit. I'd need something more than ibuprofen to handle a few thousand more feet of elevation gain in the same day. Maybe next year if you do it again.

Hi Ellen! Hi Sally! My schedule varies a lot right now, so I'm pretty much up in the air. I might give it a run tomorrow, if so I'll report conditions. The 21st is a little close to Dec 5 (the OTHTC 50k), but a two week taper might be okay if I take it a little easier.

Hi SD! If you're thinking about running it (Okay, I know you're thinking about running it!) it's a fully runnable course with a mild, steady uphill. Absolutely beautiful route. The only trick is the re-supply at Fuller Ridge - it's a lot more fun if you have supplies cached and don't have to carry all the extra water from the bottom.

If I'm able to schedule it for the 21st, I'll post and plan on seeing you all.

Steve and Fern: You guys have done it, but I remember Steve stopped and took a nap for a couple hours in the middle. What's with that? Anyway, a group of runners could be fun...we could all stay together 'til you and Fern stop and cuddle.
