I don't necessarily know what the best thing to do is.

I have lurked around this forum for a few years, but not joined until today. I live in the San Diego area and usually hike Skyline once a year as part of a C2C. My time from Museum to Notch is generally right around 5 hrs. without deliberately taking any shortcuts

I am curious how much time I could be expected to save if I were to take, say, the top 5 shortcuts along the trail. Some of you more seasoned vets might be able to hazard a guess.

Mind you, I am not particularly interested in taking any shortcuts, but, at my age (68), I am resorting to increasingly desperate measures to maintain the illusion (delusion?) that I am not falling apart. So if, with your help, I could estimate what my time would be by taking some of the "better" shortcuts, maybe I can establish a new "virtual pr" rather than having to achieve it through actual experience.

I'll admit that I have Tree friend too. We met on my first skyline which I attempted with inadequate water on a 105 degree day. My "friend " had the grace to afford me sufficient shade to allow my body temperature to cool. I stumbled out of the top of the trail much wiser. On all subsequent trips I always thank the tree for the grace shown to me with water and kind words.

So I guess I 'm just as crazy.

Glad you clarified that, Tina, lest this thread head off in a completely new direction  .

I'm always happy to hear that others have tree friends, too. I often include photos of mine in my trip reports. Sometimes on long hikes their voices are a comfort to me.
