A Lurker's First Skyline, October 9, 2010

Postby jfr » Tue Oct 12, 2010 9:51 pm

I mostly just lurk on this board, but I read everything here, nearly every day (for the past year or so, anyway), and I look at all the pictures that go with the trip reports, so in a way I almost feel like I know all the regulars. Of course, no one knows me, but that's the way life goes when you're a lurker.

Last Saturday, however, I decided to DO something about it, so I showed up in the dark at the museum in order to hike Skyline for my first time, when I knew that there would be a good turnout. This was my big chance to actually meet some of the board members. Problem: It's DARK at four AM! I thought I recognized some people getting ready with their headlamps on, but they were gone before I could say anything. And I've seen most of the faces in photos online, but the names weren't attached to them. Meanwhile, I'm a bit shy, and walking up to people and introducing myself isn't easy. So the parking lot was a bust, people-wise. Plus, I wanted to get hiking. I was already late after driving from San Diego, and I knew (from all my lurking) that Skyline noobs needed to get started early.

Sometime after six, when the sky was barely getting light, a group came up the trail from behind, and I thought I recognized Tina, probably due to the pink colored clothing. :) "Tina?" I croaked out over my nervousness. It was her. She looked at me funny, and why wouldn't she? I told her who I was, and she said "Ummm... OK" and then she and her group hiked on. Oh boy. Strange men introducing themselves to ladies in the dark? This wasn't going well. At all. I decided that I was truly an idiot, and to simply enjoy the hike, which was the main reason I was there.

But did I learn? No. A few minutes later a blond head came walking up behind me, and I also recognized her from pictures online. It was Ellen. "Ellen?" I asked, experimentally. "Yes" she replied. I told her who I was, by describing one of the silly posts I'd made (the one about the Florian Clippers). She remembered it, smiled, and shook my hand! Yes! Life was good again, for this lurker, anyway. She gave me some words of encouragement for my first-ever Skyline, and soon left me in the dust. And she keeps posting that she's slow! Anyway, meeting "that" Ellen really made my day. And she didn't even have a sign on her back! :)

Let it be stated for the record that MANY people passed me. I was hoping to catch a real-life glimpse of my heroes Steve and Fern, but I'm not sure when they started. A pair of very fast ninjas went by in the pre-dawn darkness, and I thought it might be them, but I wasn't able to make a positive identification.

Later on, not long after sunrise, I met up with a nice couple, who I hiked along with for a while. They turned out to be Dave and Doreen. She said it was her 256th (I think?) Skyline. She answered all the inane questions any newbie could have about the trail. Indeed, it was an honor to speak with her. And she's very nice. She also told me not to worry about going fast or slow, to just hike at my own pace, and to enjoy the trail, because it was beautiful. And she was right!

After that, I didn't meet anyone else from the board, that I know of. Mostly because they'd all either left before me, or passed me. Sorry, Ellen, but I'm the slow one around here. It took me a whopping ten hours to climb the trail! But I had a good time, and it was well worth every step.

Insanely long Trip Report and way too many Photos Here.

And now, it's time to go back to lurking. It was nice meeting you all on the trail! Even if you had no idea that it was me!

Sorry we didn't get to say hello, I'm sure we passed you as we started after you at 5 a.m. Nice TR and glad you enjoyed the day, there was a good group on the trail and that always makes it even more enjoyable. Fern and I always say hello as we pass by people, so we might have talked briefly.

Hope to see you again on the trail. -steve

Welcome to Skyline & other fun desert trails, and the board.
Glad you got to "meet" some of the hikers mentioned, all good peeps with lots of knowledge.

BTW, if you would enjoy hiking this great trail again, writing a letter or making a call to the BLM & Congresswomen Bono-Mack re. a proposed land exchange would be very helpful, see top posting.

Thanks,

ss

A lurkers first Skyline 10/09/10

Postby Cy Kaicener » Wed Oct 13, 2010 8:43 am

Now thats what I call a great trip report (the insanely long one) 8)
Your lurking days are over. I am looking forward to your next one - hopefully on c2c but an earlier start is required. Its amazing how your first Skyline makes you pour out your feelings. I envy anyone doing their first Skyline. The anticipaction is memorable not to mention the elation on accomplishing it.

Great trail report, jfr, and nice pictures and video. Congratulations on your first Skyline! I remember mine fondly :-) And I totally know what you mean about that steep stretch after Flat Rock. I always find myself thinking, "Why do I do this?" when I'm at that part. But then a couple days pass and it's like, "Let's do it again!"

Anyway, I'll be in town again and at the trailhead on Sunday, the 24th, probably around 4:30 AM. Looking forward to seeing Ellen again and hopefully lots of the other regulars. I'm gettin' excited!

Howdy JFR :)

Your post and trip report absolutely made my day :D -- the first Skyline is special for you and all of us who love this trail. Congratulations and thanks for so much for sharing 8)

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

PS Please don't go back to lurking, I so enjoyed reading your TR.

Skyline

JFR - Great Trip report, both short and long :D

I'm thinking you may have a new trail name "SHYGUY".

Pictures are great - thanks for sharing, congrats on your first Skyline.

I've hiked with quite a few of those that passed you, it's not you, they still look at me funny  and pass me as well in the dark, but then again I think it's because they do KNOW ME :D

If you ever see me on the trail, just bellow out "Lilbitmo" and I will stop and hike with you at any pace, it's the journey, not the destination for me :D

Once again nice job

Thanks, all, for the support, and I'm glad you enjoyed my TR.

But, I'm still a lurker at heart. In fact, I'm trying really hard right now to NOT lurk on my own thread. :D

Luckily, the best way to stop lurking is for me to do more backpacking and hiking, so I'll see what I can do about that. More hiking means more TR's and more pictures, which makes me want to do more hiking. It's a win-win all around.

Anyway, it's going to be getting cold soon, so I'm already thinking about doing a winter backpack, which I haven't done in many, many years. There's something about being warm that appeals to me. And it'll take some doing to convince my wife that winter backpacking is fun, as the packs only get heavier...
