Hi Ellen, slightly off-topic but do you know how much water vapor is lost through the lungs--especially in dry alpine environments? I'm thinking that it must be a small amount as compared to sweat loss, but I wonder about the role that plays in the hydration equation. Ya got any numbers on that? :?: And thanks for sharing the info! :)

Hey Dave, according to the scholarly sounding student exercise linked to below, about half a pound can be lost just breathing while sleeping for 6 hours (they don't say how heavy the subject was or how dry the air). That's only about a half a pint of water, but breathing is typically shallow when sleeping, and often through the nose. My guess is that heavy breathing via the mouth during strenous exercise in a dry mountain air environment could easily triple or quadruple that. So my guess would be as much as a liter in 6 or 8 hours over and above sweating.

Howdy Scott,

Thanks for your kind words about the "event." No worries -- I had a good laugh and it was fun to change my signature to "THAT Ellen."

Hope to meet you on the trail.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

We got winners, we got losers
Mystery substance smokers and boozers
And we got yuppies, we got bikers
We got thirsty tired hikers
And we all conclude our hikes at the Tram Bar

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this board

We got cowboys, we got truckers
Broken-hearted fools and suckers
And we got hustlers, we got fighters
Early birds and all-nighters
And the veterans talk about their battle scars

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this board

I love this board
It's my kind of place
Just lookin' at the postin's
Puts a big smile on my face
It ain't too far, come as you are
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this board

I'm bringin my guitar next time and singin' this song (just like my cousin Toby) at the Notch.

Howdy Z :)

NICE!!! You and Hiking Jim should create "Skyline -- the musical." Looking forward to hearing you serenade us with a guitar on the Never Ending Ridge.
