Hi Ellen,

Okay since you mentioned the yogurt first I'll admit to liking a cup of hot chocolate and yogurt from Starbucks about an hour ahead of the hike.

It was 112 degrees out in Thermal and Oasis today - I got exhausted just getting in and out of my truck. I can't imagine going up the Skyline Trail in this weather.

C2c - June 23

Postby Cy Kaicener » Fri Jun 22, 2007 2:44 pm

Welcome to this board Kevin - I think the temperature change here is a bit different than Denali :) At what time were you thinking of starting? I think the current heat wave should discourage most people from going, but you never know. I went at 2 am three weeks ago and suffered from the heat.
This Saturday I will be taking the tram up and hiking down towards Flat Rock.

Yo Kevin...what's up?

Congrats again on the Denali ascent! Awesome accomplishment!

Are you seriously thinking about hiking c2c this weekend?

By the way, I'm still looking for a sweet deal on the Alpha SV jacket.

Thanks Rob. It sure is Cy. Sitting in my little cubical at work bored out of my mind, I thought it'd be interesting to experience temperature difference of over 100 degrees within a month period. Rob, remember two years ago in May when we did the Grand Canyon crossing? I believe it was triple digit heat in the canyon floor. Well, I went up north to do Mt. Shasta the weekend after that. It wasn't quite 100 degree change but was close.

To answer your question, no, I wasn't not intending to do the c2c but thought if there some crazy people out there on the trail, I might tag along.

Thanks Kathy. I see that you want to do Russell this summer. When are you planning to do the climb?

Hello everyone, Now that my memory of the pain and the struggle during the hike seems to have faded away somewhat, I would like to thank everyone for the information posted here that helped me prepare for the hike. Again, thank you, Hikin_Jim, for the timely info that led to the cancellation of the posted trip on the OCHBC meetup group. Cy, I don't know where you sent it, but I never got it. My thanks for your concern is just the same. There could have been worse than the two rescues on June 23. I went the next day, June 24. My foremost reason for the hike was to take pictures so I could not go at night. In any case, it took me 14 hours (I believe I am now the Skyline record holder for person with the longest finish time :) )
I have posted a few pictures here:
http://urbanexplor.meetup.com/62/calend ... pastdetail
And I plan to post all of them here this weekend:
http://leeland.shutterfly.com/
Some numbers from the hike:
- 8 quarts of water, 4 quarts of Gatorade, Powerade, etc.
(drank 4 quart of water and all of Gatorade, etc.)
- I ate little: 2 peanut butter and jam sandwiches, 1 apple, and 5 pieces of dried apricot.
- the tram ticket agent let me through without buying the 1-way ticket (told me the record for Skyline was 2h45m by someone who ran).
- $ 21.75 for the taxi ride from the tram's desert station back to the palm springs art museum.
- I did not bring a sleeping bag but was prepared to spend the night in the mountain.

I told myself during and immediately after the hike that I would never do that again, but now ... :)
Thanks again, everyone.
