C2C2C-Saturday October 9th

General Palm Springs area.

Postby LarryK » Wed Sep 29, 2010 2:15 pm

My son and I are planning on the full C2C2C. Starting about 3am.

BUT, what about the weather? Right now we're looking at 100 in Palm Springs on Oct 9. Sounds a bit high. Any thought of waiting a week or 2?

Just wondering.

If the temperature low is around 70 degrees it should be okay. Everybody handles heat differently. I plan on starting a lot earlier than 3 am. I would prefer to be close to Flat Rock (5900 ft) by the time the sun comes out.

If for any reason there is a heat wave, October 23 is a full moon I believe.

but this is a C2C2C hike; so you have to think about what the temperature is going to be like when you hike back down to Palm Springs. 70 degrees overnight is too hot for me to even do C2C - I can't imagine hiking back down to Palm Springs when the overnight temperature only goes down to 70 degrees, but I don't handle the heat very well.

I agree Kathy, that being the low, there may be a few bailouts coming back by the tram on the way down. And they will be the lucky ones. I hope people that aren't accustomed to the heat will consider that return temperature wisely.

Fern and I did our last C2C2C when there was still mushy snow (cool weather) from Miller saddle up, and that drained us.

If it's warm, it's going to be much, much worse.

ok, here I am again, Ms. Party Pooper (please excuse me but after what I witnessed during 5 years on RMRU, I'm more wary of the wilderness now than before).

Last November, a number of team members hiked down the Skyline and reached Palm Springs after dark. It was MIND-BOGGLING how it kept getting hotter and hotter as we descended, even as the sun went down. One team member - one of the strongest hikers - succumbed to heat exhaustion and had to be assisted for the last couple of miles.

Keep in mind, by the time you are descending into Palm Springs after hiking to the summit, you will not be at your freshest (duh!). Your body will be depleted. This should be a no brainer, right? But some people think it's enough to have a strong will, determination, and a positive attitude. If only that were so.

Please exercise caution. How you feel as you reach the Tram on your return will be NO indication of how you will feel towards the bottom of the Skyline. And the problem is, there's no easy way off that friggin' trail.

I admire people's desire to challenge themselves, however, I cannot applaud foolhardiness. Please consider Kathy and bluerail's comments. There is no shame in taking the Tram down.

I agree with Kathy and Steve. You should not ever consider hiking back down to the car. The tram is a life saver. You will be drained and dehyrated by the time you get back to Long Valley.

hi everyone....well it is all depending on the heat for sure. the only other weekends i can do this is oct 23rd or oct 30th with my prefernce being the 23rd because there will be a full moon on the 22nd. it will for sure be a lot cooler and i agree that safety must preceed any ego involved...coming from me thats hard to do or even say

I am waiting to see what the weather will be like on oct 9th before i reschedule my c2c2c2.
