As I said, "I did wonder...". I believe I've tried to snap a cable tie once in my life without a tool, and failed.

My comment was of the devil's advocate type - if you are in such trouble that you need to open a rescue box, having to find a way to get through a cable tie, without a knife or scissors, has the potential at least for supreme and unfortunate irony. Just an observation. I've been in heat trouble once and could barely put one foot in front of the other.

Hmm. Too easy and you invite non-emergency use. Too hard and you defeat the very purpose of the box.

A plastic cable tie (or "zip tie" I think they're called also) sounds like a reasonable balance. Seems like a rock ought to do it in an emergency, yes? Putting a blade there seems like too much of an invitation to me.

On the other hand, major bummer if you guess wrong on this one and someone can't get in when they need to.

Zip tie....put stick in and twist. simple.

did however change the zip tie to something simpler yesterday. something that can be undone and redone, as was intended with the simple tie that someone replaced with the zip tie.

I have some little skinny zip ties that would be easier to break than the one that was there if anyone thinks that's a good idea.

So, I gather this "Zip" fellow wears a lot of "ties"?

Florian, cord was used, it can be untied and retied. There are going to be curious people that are going to have to look, maybe with the cord, they can keep it closed after they have a look.
