Weather cool, Tram open, Skyline anyone?

Postby zippetydude » Tue Sep 07, 2010 10:41 am

Looks like it's going to be cool this weekend, and it's the last chance to do Skyline with the tram operating until October. I hadn't planned on doing it, but I might now with this favorable weather.

Is anyone else planning on doing it?

I can't, but thanks for your post, because that's what made me check the weather and think about going Saturday. I hope it stays cool. Skyline on a brisk autumn day is wonderful.

No way you can go Saturday? It'd be my guess that at least a few others would be going to take advantage of the weather.

Hi Tina. Hey, you should have done the run to the top! Maybe the Tram Road Challenge in October?

About the closure, I couldn't find anything on the tram site, but this is what Nick had posted:

The tram will be closed for it's annual maintenance from September 13 through October 1.

Looks like I'll be missing out, though. I just found I have a work commitment Saturday morning. I might try to go Sunday, but that's sketchy, and I don't know if the weather will hold. Rats.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to close for annual maintenance

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway will be closed for maintenance nearly two weeks, starting Sept. 13.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway will be closed for maintenance nearly two weeks, starting Sept. 13. The tram will reopen Sept. 25.

The tram will reopen Sept. 25, tramway spokeswoman Lena Zimmerschied said.

Crews will be replacing the 1 3/4-inch steel cables that support the counterweights. They are scheduled to be changed every 12 years, said Rob Parkins, the tramway’s general manger.

In addition, the Valley and Mountain stations will be cleaned, refurbished and repainted, Parkins said.

The maintenance is scheduled during the tramway’s annual shut down.

As of right now, the tram web site states the tram will reopen Sept. 25. This information is buried in the special events area of their web site. Before counting on the ride down, I'd check it the day before.
