And unpopular water too. Seriously. Put a putrid looking mix of food coloring into the water along with iodine tablets. I bet that'll cut down on non-emergency use.

"Peel and stick" label on each bottle: This water looks awful and tastes worse, but it is safe to drink and will save your life in an emergency.

theres already a bottle of water on the trail that finally, lastnight, I decided looked so bad I would rather die than drink it. Nobody has bothered it for quite a while now.

and Florian, someone has taken all the bottled water out of the bucket...and LEFT an EMPTY half gallon jug in there place !! some people!!

I like sardines. One of my standard camping lunch/dinner items. I'll have yours.

At least they took the other empties. Cooler temps forecast for Sunday. I'm sort of thinking to try and visit the cache. Might hike down from LV and back.

From FreePatentsOnline.com

Fire alarm deterrent
United States Patent 4081796
A housing for fire alarm boxes which positively marks a person turning in an alarm, frustrates attempts to use a hook or other tool in place of the hand for actuating an alarm, and which permits rapid actuation of the alarm but slows withdrawal of the hand from the housing; the housing forms an enclosure around and below an alarm box large enough for access of a hand upward from the bottom; a dye-covered resilient door at the bottom affixed to the front of the housing extending up and toward the bottom of the fire alarm box guards the access to the alarm, and must be deflected upwardly forcefully by a hand reaching for the alarm; withdrawal of the hand requires simultaneously a slow twisting of the hand to free it from the edge of the resilient door; the twisting covers all parts of the hand with dye so that evidence of turning in the alarm cannot be concealed short of concealing the entire hand.

Could be modified onto a "water dispensing box." It would be funny to see the guys with glowing paint on their arms on tram ride down. Kind of a Skyline scarlet letter

Do I have to say I'm kidding?......kind of.

One of the most appealing features of the Skyline hike is the fact that there is no evidence of civilization on the trail.

With the exception of the path itself, man has not changed or determined how Skyline should look.

There is no governance as to what markings or emergency boxes are allowed, etc. Who wants to figure out how all that should work-- what the rules should be?

When I decide to hike Skyline, I like the fact that I have to ask myself, can I and the members of my group make it all the way up with only each other to depend upon.

It is all much less complicated that way.

Isn't that the case with all hikes?

If any cache or rescue box becomes a nuisance it should be removed. I'll remove the bucket (as i did once) anytime i think it becomes a problem. But i agree with your general feelings about the trail. I certainly don't want to see a rescue box or emergency phone every mile along the route.

Maybe add a little salt to the water. Some people think it's disgusting when I add salt to my water bottles, but it's actually a good idea in the heat. 1 teaspoon per gallon, labeled as salt water. I think the reason most sports drinks don't have enough salt is because it would decrease sales.
