Arun - Midnight is a great time to start provided the temperature at that time is not more than about 75 degrees and you dont lose the "trail" which then becomes a route Hopefully one of the regulars on this board will volunteer to go with you. October is better.

ag - I think Cy is trying to tell you in a diplomatic manner DON'T do it in September! You may have done all kinds of hikes in other locations. However, this is unique. In all probablility you will make it. However, you will most likely be telling yourself along the way that this was a dumb thing to do. There is a decent chance that you will have to call Search and Rescue to get you off the mountain. Hopefully, it is not in a body bag. Take a cel-phone with you.

For what it's worth, early September is the hottest time of year in Southern California.

Yes!! Tram mtn station to peak is a great hike!

You will enjoy the hike from the tram to San Jacinto Peak. It's about 5 1/2 miles one way with an elevation gain of about 2,300 feet. It is still important to bring more water than you think you will need. Just in case, also be prepared for a summer thunderstorm.

Am planning on 6 Litres/person. Reg. Thunderstorms in the area...are they (as in CO 14ers) "typically" noon and later events..? My plan was to take the first tram up and start the hike.

Six liters per person might be just a little toward the high end (I can't believe I'm saying that - I always say more is much better). I would probably have 4 liters per person. As far as thunderstorms, just bring a light poncho or the always stylish large trash bag. Generally, these are afternoon events. However, you never know. Chances are there will be nothing. Don't forget to pick up a free wilderness permit at the ranger station.
