PSMP in need of assistance

Postby ntheno » Mon Aug 23, 2010 8:53 am

The Palm Springs Mounted Police(PSMP) are looking for volunteers who regularly hike the skyline trail to assist in monitoring rescue boxes that will consist of essential supplies(water,shade,911 only cell phone etc.). Those of you who are interested could you please contact me on this site for further information. Additional feedback on the suggested contents of the boxes is welcome. Thank you all for your help and assistance!
In my experience, those who hike alone are more likely to be carried off alone in a body bag.

JB weld a spot locater to the box, longer lasting than a cell phone and more cost effective.

Hi ntheno. Seems like a great idea. I think the only thing that's kept people from doing this previously is that people, for some reason that escapes me, simply take the stuff, whether or not they need it. (At least that is my conjecture - water bottles disappear out of that extremely fast, so either people are taking water pointlessly or Florian has saved hundreds of lives.)

I'm wondering what will keep people from plundering the boxes like they do with Florian's bucket...

I'm looking forward to getting up the Skyline again next month to restock the bucket. If i could stop by once a week and restock i would but i don't hike the trail in summer.

I think it's smart, if you must place these, to put them out of view, otherwise people can easily begin to depend on them, possibly requiring even more rescues.
I realize it can save SAR's a lot of time & effort to pinpoint those in need, or possibly even allow a few to "come back to life" and just maybe get out on there own, but discretion should be taken as to how you place these, IMHO.

I may be willing to aid, depending on the arrangement, placement etc.
It is a wilderness, after all, but I'm for assisting those it "real" need.

I hike it regularly most of the year.
