Zen Center, Desert Divide, San J to tram

Howdy All :)

Team Loco Lobo (Kathryn, Karin, the amazing Yoli, George, and Lindella and the bloddy blond) started at the Zen Center at 6 AM Sunday morning. Karin, Yoli and I arranged the return car shuttle on Friday and Kathryn drove us up -- an hour drive from the Starbucks on 74 :? I'll say this -- the trail from the Zen Center gets you to the PCT quickly.

This was my first time spending any significant time on the desert divide. It is incredibly beautiful -- every time you round a corner, you have a different view. At times you have the feeling that you're suspended in the air between the desert and Lake Hemet. The only downside was the heat: I wasn't acclimated due to our relatively cool summer. At 9 AM it was 87 degrees. Fortunately, the young pacific diamondback rattlesnake that we walked right by stayed curled up.

It was wonderful to reach the shade as we approached Little Tahquitz Valley. We took our first real break at the trail intersection and meet individuals from the Natural History Museum of San Diego who were doing a centential survey of the fauna of the San Jacintos. We then headed north up to the Willow Creek trail junction. Kathryn and Lindella have been hiking a lot and opted to head up to the tram via Hidden Divide.

The rest of Team Loco Lobo headed to Saddle Junction and then up to Wellman's Divide. The amazing Yoli and George went ahead and Karin stayed with me as I began to slow due to the heat and climb. Dipped my bandana in Wellman's Cienega. Then, finally, Wellman's Divide and blessed shade and cool breeze. We briefly discussed whether we wanted to summit or head to the tram, then went for the peak. Reached the summit about 2 PM, had a quick lunch (the folks on top didn't have the usual customary happy energy) and started down.

We opted to take the old Tamarack trail. This turned out to be a big mistake for me -- the demonic cougars were out in force and added to the damange I sustained from my hike up the Momyer trace trail the week before. I entered the tram station bloody, hungry and cranky, met Kathryn and Lindella the tram bar, and quickly pounded down a beer before we headed down.

Lindella and Kathryn accompanied me for dinner -- I knew that I wouldn't survive the long drive home without fuel. I remembered that there was a Las Consuelas near the Starbucks. After 15 minutes of driving around (poor Lindella didn't have air conditioning), we finally found it tucked away -- Casuelas Cafe. Had a fabulous dinner and were pleasantly surprised to run into Doug and friends on our way out.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Hey Ellen,

Gee, you will do just about anything for a beer.....

How many deer did you come across on your trip?

Last night on my weekly run thru Taq. Valley I came upon 4 different groups of deer.

A total head count of 11 in about an hour.

There were not very skiddish,, after I initially suprised them the went about 20 yards away and just watched me.

THe creeks are still very full for this time of year.

I've done the hike from the Zen Center to Red Tahquitz and back numerous times and it never fails to thrill me. That's one of my favorite sections of trail in So Cal. I hope we have some pictures forthcoming.

I'm wondering, though. Have you ever finished a hike where you weren't left bloodied?

Hi Ellen,
Sounds like you had another excellent adventure (minus the demonic cougers and heat). As usual the little voices in my head are telling me I want to try it for myself!
Would you happen to know the mileage from the Zen Center to the San J Peak using the route you took? Also, do you know the approximate elevation of the Zen Center? Just curious!

Looking at the topo the Zen Center is just under 5600'. When i hiked out that way a couple weeks ago we left vehicles down closer to 5000'. Made for a couple of extra miles walking out.

Is it still customary to ask the Zen Cen for permission to pass? I know that on the Sierra Club trip (HPS) that I did Red Tahauitz, South Peak, and Antsell Rock on, the leader mentioned that he had coordinated with the Zen Cen.

Howdy Hal :)

What an amazing trail -- I've never been on anything quite like it. Now I want to do Tina's Desert Divide hike and go from Cedar Springs to Idylwild. I didn't take pictures but others did.

I always expect a little bleeding when I hike due to my extreme blondosity  I'm just not happy when I donate major pieces of skin to the wilderness.

Howdy Sally :)

22 miles and likely over 6 K of gain -- there's a fair amount of up and down before you get to Tahquitz Valley.

When are we doing the Deer Springs/Seven Pines loop?

Howdy KD :)

I do like my beer. At least hiking takes care of the calories. And, the beer takes care of the post-hiking trauma

As I asked Sally, when are we doing the Deer Springs/Seven Pines loop?

Howdy Jim :)

Yes -- one should get permission to park at the Zen Center and be quiet while hiking by.

Ellen

Hi Ellen, Hmmm... 22 miles? I guess I won't try doing it as an out and back day hike! The car shuttle looks to be the best way unless I were to make it an overnighter.
I'll be ready for the Seven Pines/Deer Springs loop when I get back from the Sierras next week. Wednesdays and Sundays are good for me.
