Desert Divide

I did the DD last week, its a long one. started in idllywild and ended at cedar springs. 13 hours total.
Its a beautiful hike but soooooooooooooooooooooo long.
I took 6 liters of water and was rationing it at the end. Anyone planning to do this hike should plan on taking 7-8 liters and lots of food.

Sounds like a great hike. Must have been pretty hot? I have watned to try that one, but in the other direction, and in cooler weather. Did you check for water at Apache Spring, or Cedar Spring?

Did the Desert Divide from Hwy 74 to the Tram a few years ago. What a great area. It was pretty much the same hike but about 10 miles longer. The worst part for me was the side of Spitler Peak that had the sun beating down on you. Brutal.

No water, there was a small running spring after Taquitz so i filled up a liter there. it was still the first part of the hike so i only took a liter....my mistake.
it wasn't too bad, temps around 8k ft were about 78. It was actually cool in some places.
it was the oddest thing, right before one of the junctions towards the 74 there are two chairs facing one another. i thought there would be some water stashed but nothing.
another junction had a bear canister with tuna and cliff bars.

Desert Divide

I did a google search on Desert Divide including San Jacinto and came up with this link
http://www.summitpost.org/area/range/17 ... anges.html

The Peninsular Range includes Picacho del Diablo 10,153 in Baja (San Pedro Matir Mtns) which is like doing c2c only steeper. A great climb.

Hi Cy, did you climb Big Picacho? I've been looking at that one for a while...actually now I think it would be pretty similar to a climb up snow creek.

Yes Ze - I climbed it with the Sierra Club a long time age

Its a lot like Snow Creek in many ways, but the approach is not as bad except for the driving.

Sounds like Fobes Saddle. There is water there not too far off the trail. I know that whole thing really well being that I live fairly close. I LOVE the section between Desert View right near Red Tahquitz and the Apple Canyon junction. Probably my favorite section of trail in So Cal. Once when I ran it it felt like I was flying. Of course, with the steep dropoffs if I made one wrong step I would have been.

Do we have pictures forthcoming?

I hiked the divide on 8/8 from Tahquitz Peak to Apple Canyon with a meetup.com group organized by Mark. (Mark is hvydrt here on the SJ forum.) Here are my pics from the hike ..

We did Tahquitz, Red Tahquitz, South Peak. I headed down early while the others did Antsell Rock, Apache Peak, and one did Spitler Peak too!

I love the divide and as Hal mentioned especially the area between Red Tahquitz and Apple Canyon.
