According to BLM surface land records, almost all of Chino Canyon is part of the Mt. San Jac State Park. The part that isn't is all of Section 7, in which the Valley Station and the parking lots sit. The N/S dividing line between Section 7 (tram property) and Section 12 (State Park property) is about 2/3's of the way from the Valley Station to the water tank below Tower 1. Essentially the section line is where the turnaround is on the paved road to the water tank.

Certainly the tram folks can prohibit access across their property (ala DWA), but it's not clear if the State Park property has any access restrictions. Theoretically, unless there are unknown, unposted restrictions, one should legally be able to descend Chino Canyon as far as the Valley Station's water tank (if one were stupid enough). You could then sit there and stare at the tram's security folks, contemplating your next move.

Perhaps something >= the "Lost Guy Traverse" might be from Humber to the peak, then down the Skyline to Palm Springs. It's a greater distance and elevation differential (and legal!)

I don't know about going directly down Chino (too much scree and brush for my taste) BUT according to the George Wharton James in his 1906 Wonders of The Colorado Desert there used to be a trail from Chino Canyon that went from the hot springs up the mountain toward where the Skyline is. Now THAT might be fun to look for. I figure it's got to start somewhere near the lowest parking lot.

Is that the swimming hole just below the Welcome sign on the tramway road which you reach by going through the double gate?

What I really wanna do is that : lost guy - south to north traverse.
(but as a day trip)

Somebody needs to set that one up so we come in as a group and hopefully they think it's just mass stupidity and we dont get yelled at. I'm sure if Fern and I are caught sliding down Chino Canyon on our butts, we're gonna get in trouble from more than just the DWA.

any thoughts zip ? Get Tina to set it up ?

Im certainly up for anything that questions sanity

C2C2C

Regarding the tram property, if my memory serves me correctly, both the upper and lower tram stations, all towers and a corridor under and extending a short distance to the sides of the cables are all tramway controlled.

Happy Trails
