Ay Caramba!

Postby Kathryn61 » Fri Jul 23, 2010 9:07 am

I went to Caramba yesterday with Ellen, Michael (Hikoholic), Perry, Don, Bruce and Marilyn. It was beautiful! There were many waterfalls and several pools filled with freezing, crystal clear water. This is definitely a place worth seeing. I wanted to swim and so I stepped into the pool. The water was so cold that it hurt my feet and legs. I couldn't go all the way in, as it was just too cold for me. And then I watched Ellen. She just marched on over to the edge of the pool, walked in, dove under, swam to a massive rushing waterfall and got right in it! She looked like she was having the time of her life!

Thanks to all of you for a great day, a great hike, great friendship and a really fun time at Las Casuelas afterwards!

Hope to hike with you all again soon!

Kathryn

I agree Caramba was the highlight of our backpacking through San Jacinto last weekend. Having a stream next to our camp site was awesome and yes that water was cold but very refreshing after a hot day of hiking. Here's pics of our trip... http://www.dennislloydphoto.com/p378347558[/url]

Dang. Maybe I'd better shut up on how nice Caramba is. Now people are starting to actually go. :)

Hi All,
Glad you were able to make it to Caramba on Thursday. After seeing Dennis' photos I went to check it out on Wednesday! I started from Humber Park at 6:40am, and swung by Tahquitz Peak on the way there. I ran into a gentleman and when I asked him about Caramba, he tried to discourage me from going, saying the trail was unmaintained. I went anyway taking the PCT down to Tahquitz Valley and down to Caramba. The trail was beautiful and the only unmaintained thing was some fallen trees and those pesky wildflowers growing in the trail! When I got to Caramba I had a tough time deciding whether to eat my lunch on the overlook or down by the stream. Soon I needed to head back, it was hot but worth it! On the way back I saw a deer (see pics). I got back to my car at 5pm. It was 16.6 miles.

Sally, is the Tahquitz Peak fire lookout operational now?

Hi Florian,
It was unmanned when I got there, but on the way back down Devil's Slide I came upon an old codger struggling up the hill in the heat. He was on the way up to man the tower. He is a volunteer.
