I just didn't want to make the drive planning on Fuller Ridge without knowing my car would make it. Do you know how long you drive on the dirt road until you reach the TH?
About an hour.

Well, we did both peaks on 7/3 and had a blast!! I was afraid my dog wasn't going to make it and that I'd have to carry her down to Humber from Tahquitz Valley, but she got a 2nd wind and we made it down :)
I can't remember whether I suggested it or seconded it, but either way, it's a great spot to go to. My favorite peaks in the SJ's don't have trails: Red Tahquitz, Marion, Jean, Cornell. Folly's interesting too but not much to see; it's too flat on top. Haven't been to Drury which really isn't much of a peak, but I'm sure it'd be an enjoyable hike.

Marion Mountain is much harder. Fuller Ridge is probably the gentlest way to the summit other than going to via the Tram. It has the least elevation gain and while there is a little up and down it's not bad.

My GPS seems to think it has several hundred feet of up and down multiple times. I'll see if I saved the profile so we know what the total elevation gain for the day is. I remember it being a lot more than I thought it looked like on the map.

As for time from the pavement to the TH, we did it in about 20 minutes, which is most likely why the road seemed so rough. We didn't allow for very long of a drive. I'll know better next time.

Of the routes I have been on so far - Fuller, Devils' Slide and South Ridge - Devil's Slide is by far the easiest way to the summit. ............................................DUG

I beg to differ

While the Fuller Ridge Trail may have some ups and downs they are not really that significant. The trailhead is 1300 feet higher than Humber Park so the total elevation gain is quite a bit less. I know the gain coming around Castle Rocks on the return seems tough but it's only because one's usually tired at that point.

Now the last time I was on the trail it did take me about four hours to get to the summit but that was because I started at Snow Creek and hiked all the way up and there was also a lot of ice along the trail. I was a bit tired after the first 17 miles or so to the trailhead.

Regardless, I enjoy all the trails on the mountain but this one with its views has to be my favorite.

3 weeks ago, it took us 35 minutes from the paveent to get up, one of the vehicles was lower and did just fine. Marion mountain is steep and steady and you reach the Deer springs trailhead in no time. The elevation loss on Fuller is due to crossing from the east side of the ridge to the west side, and back and back again. With this you get the best views of the desert and west to Baldy. The toughest part of the hike is Deer Springs, which is part of both Marion and Fuller. I figured the round trip to be just about 16 miles. I liked Marion for a day hike, but Fuller for a 2 day.

Okay, change of plans...

I've decided against attempting San Jacinto this weekend, mainly due to being a wimp with the heat. We're just going to park at the Deer Springs TH and hike up to Suicide Rock and back. Has anyone done this little trip, and have any input? I am assuming you need rock climbing skills and equipment to get atop the rock, but just to get to it and back would be cool with me.

Anything to get the dog out of the house and exercising. Nothing like a tired puppy :)

I would encourage you to stick with the Fuller Ridge. It's higher elevation and ridge line exposure should make the heat much less of an issue. You don't have to go to the Peak, just hiking to Deer Springs is worth while. The views along the ridge are some of the finest you'll find anywhere.

If you stick with the Suicide Rock idea, the trail will bring you in from the back side, on top, no special equipment or skills needed.

Happy Trails
