Suggestions for this Sunday??

Postby Juneboarder » Mon Jul 12, 2010 12:59 pm

I'm headed back to San Jacinto for another fun day. I just got a call back from the ranger station and all the permits they issue ahead of time are gone for Devil's Slide Trail. I was thinking of San Jacinto via Fuller Ridge, but I hear that you need a high clearance vehicle to access the TH. Does anyone know the road condition for the Fuller Ridge TH, or know of any other TH's that will be accessible on Sunday?

If you don't mind a couple of bumpy areas the road to Fuller Ridge trailhead is drivable with regular car. Well, maybe not a low-rider or very low clearance vehicle. There are some tight turns but nothing technical.

Fuller Ridge...

Postby Juneboarder » Mon Jul 12, 2010 1:13 pm

So, just a bit bumpy and curvy? I drive a Toyota Matrix. It's not lowered at all, but definitely low to me, as my last car was a Toyota Prerunner... I just didn't want to make the drive planning on Fuller Ridge without knowing my car would make it. Do you know how long you drive on the dirt road until you reach the TH?

Thanks again for all your input and help!! Was it you that suggested my sister and I continue on to Red Tahquitz after completing Tahquitz? Well, we did both peaks on 7/3 and had a blast!! I was afraid my dog wasn't going to make it and that I'd have to carry her down to Humber from Tahquitz Valley, but she got a 2nd wind and we made it down :)

A Matrix is pretty small right? I think you'd be okay on the road. There is nothing soft but there are some gravely and bumpy bits. But i drive a Toyota 4x4 pickup so what looks easy to me might look hard to someone else. It's about 8 miles of dirt from highway to trailhead.

No, wan't me re Red Tahquitz. But glad you enjoyed that too!

Also, just in case you weren't aware since you have a dog, dogs are not allowed in the state park which you'll be in starting a couple miles up the Fuller Ridge trail.

Yes, I'm aware...

Tahquitz was pushing the limits for Ginger a few weeks ago. I wouldn't dream of attempting San Jacinto with her... that's too much for a doggie to handle :)

Just did the Fuller Ridge trail Saturday. My crew cab diesel hated that road because of the tight turns and the bumps. If I had some weight in the back it would have been a better ride. That being said you will be ok with a Matrix if you are careful and slow. We saw Hondas and mini vans parked at the campgrounds so clearance isn't s huge issue. It actually looked like it had been recently graded.

The trail head parking is to the right once you see the sign. Follow it towards campsite number six.

Have a good hike..................DUG

I did the road in the wife's Sienna minivan and it was OK. I've done it a number of times without a problem. It's the least used trailhead to the summit and offers the nicest views.

Do you know if Fuller Ridge is more or less strenuous than Marion Mountain? As well, do you know the approx. roundtrip mileage from Fuller Ridge TH to San Jacinto Peak and back?

My son thinks that MM and Fuller Ridge are about the same. I think Fuller is easier. Tom Harrison has the RT mileage at 15 and change, but my GPS thinks it's 16.5. You will have uphill both ways. Good hike and there is plenty of water along the route.................................DUG
