Wellman's, Strawberry Cienenga, San J loop

Happy 4th of July All :)

Lance and headed out what I refer to as Walt's long loop -- I believe it's 18 miles and has about 4,500 ft of elevation gain. Ran into several regulars in the boarding area -- Indie Jack, Doreen the Skyline Queen, and Indio Joe. It was toasty even at 8:20 AM. Jack's son flew by us before we reached Wellman's. Dropped down to the Strawberry Cienega trail -- my favorite part of the loop. It was lush with new vegetation, bubbling streams and wildflowers. I especially love the Snow plants -- they remind me of little red Christmas trees.

When we connected with Deer Springs, we saw the trail work  (including rock blasting) Sally discussed in her Deer Springs post. As we approached the Fuller Ridge trail intersection, we smelled smoke :? and wondered why someone had set an illegal campfire. Headed up through what Lance calls the 'desert" section -- there's no shade and the trail is overgrown with #$% buckthorn and other scratchy foliage. Help St. Florian, where are you with your trusty Florian's?

I wanted to take a bath in the stream at Little Round Valley but out of courtesy to Lance just dipped my bandana. Made our way up the never ending swtichbacks to the trail junction and clambered up the rocks to the summit. The breeze on the summit was equisite -- I wanted to take a nap. Going down, we ran into a couple we'd met over on San Gorgonio last summer and stayed with them until Wellman's. They dropped down to Devil's Slide and we headed for home. For some reason, the hike from Round Valley to the tram was interminable. Ran into Ranger Rick and colleagues in Long Valley taking out a hiker with a broken leg. Had the usual fabulous meal at Las Casuelas before heading home.

Nice to run into you yesterday Ellen, great to see Lance too. Glad the trip was nice, the peak was crowded but we were able to find peace and quite in the smoking area. We got a short nap in and some photos before heading back down. Patti did her first C2C without hardly breaking a sweat and was happy and laughing all the way through. She had more gas in her tank than Fern or I either one...but hey, he and I have excuses.

sorry we lost Tina and Micheal to the Tram vortex

Happy Fourth Of July everyone.

Hi Ellen,
Sounds like you had a great day yesterday. Would you believe I've never taken the Strawberry Cienega trail? I'm thinking of doing Devil's Slide to PCT to Strawberry Cienega, up Deer Springs to the peak and coming back down past Wellman's and back down the Slide on Wednesday. It's just a hair short of 20 miles. I hope that's not biting off more than I want to chew.

When the CCC was dynamiting boulders on the Deer Springs trail I don't know why they couldn't have done a little buckthorn abatement while they were at it.

Hope everyone is having a nice 4th!

I must be in a rut

Postby Ellen » Sun Jul 11, 2010 11:18 am

Howdy All :)

I must be spending too much time around Steve and Fern
Headed back up yesterday for another go at the 18 mile loop. Ran into the "usual suspects" (Queen Doreen, Indie Jack, Indio Joe) in the boarding area.

It was humid and much warmer than last Saturday. The bugs were also out in force, especially by the streams along the Strawberry Cienega. I actually find this hike more challenging than South Fork to San Gorgonio, probably due to the up and down nature of the loop. Also, at my speed, I'm making the final climb up San Jacinto in the heat of the day.

Reached the summit at about 1:15. It was very warm. I picked the flat rock just below the flat summit rock and found several scouts huddled underneath taking advantage of the shade. Gives a whole new meaning to "crawling out from under a rock" The troup also did a nice re-staging of the Iwo Jima US flag picture before descending.

Ran out of water on the summit and drank copiously out of the Round Valley spigot. I didn't taste any dead rats and will hopefully not come down with Giardia. Had a beer at the tram bar -- for purely anti-biotic purposes of course

Howdy All :)

Heard about the two Skyline rescues from Indie Jack and Queen Doreen :?

My mountain angels (SAR) were also in the boarding area getting ready to head up for what I assume what a training exercise.

Thank goodness for modern medicine! Is this little beverage in any of Ellen's books?
