Howdy Don :)

NICE 8) Great trip report --- I love the morning summit photo.

We ran into some geo-cache folks on San Gorgonio last Saturday morning.

Miles of smiles,

Regarding the well known quote about San Jacinto Peak by John Muir, I have read (and I tend to believe it is true) that the closest that John Muir got to San Jacinto Peak was a visit to Garner Valley. Anybody know how to determine if this is correct?

John Robinson's book - "San Bernardino Mountain Trails" has it list on page #182 http://books.google.com/books?id=AbY0eu4hGGQC&lpg=PA182&ots=Eqp7DS7kwi&dq=%22The%20view%20from%20San%20Jacinto%20is%20the%20most%20sublime%20spectacle%20to%20be%20found%20anywhere%20on%20this%20earth!%22&pg=PA182#v=onepage&q=%22The%20view%20from%20San%20Jacinto%20is%20the%20most%20sublime%20spectacle%20to%20be%20found%20anywhere%20on%20this%20earth!%22&f=false

Robinson states that John Muir stood on the summit and watched the sunrise from the summit in 1896, you might want to write to the publisher to get where that came from - also note that you have to copy and paste the link above. It would not generate it's own hyperlink no matter how many times I tried it just would not work.

See if this shortened version of the link works ► http://is.gd/d9hFd

I know where I saw that. See "The San Jacintos" also by Robinson, page 195 Note 1. We may never know for sure, and I guess it doesn't matter.

For those of us who don't have a copy, I don't suppose you could quote (or paraphrase) note 1?

I've got the book at home. I'll quote it this evening, unless someone has access to the book before then and can quote it. Bottom line is that it indicates that it is unlikely that John Muir went to San Jacinto Peak.

FWIW, my copy of San Bernardino Mountain Trails has the same quote but no footnote. 8th printing Nov 1999, 4th edition.
