Water along the trail?

Postby DUG » Fri Jun 25, 2010 6:43 am

We're headed up South Ridge to Tahquitz and then over to San Jacinto on Sunday as a practice for 2 July Whitney attempt. When we went up Devil's Slide a few weeks ago there was plenty of snow, but no water along the PCT out of Saddle Junction (that's as far as we got).

When we went up Marion Mountain last weekend to the summit there was water everywhere.

Just wondering if anyone knows of flowing water along the PCT to Saddle Junction and up through Wellman Divide towards the summit.

We're hoping to carry a light water load (40-50 ounces) to duplicate what we plan to carry on Whitney.

Thanks............................DUG

There is water at Wellman's Cienega about a half mile before you get to Wellman's Divide. And i think still a few snow patches near the peak but i haven't been to the summit recently.

Why are you planning on carrying so much weight? On Whitney you shouldn't need more than 30 lbs. unless you're planning on a week up there.

HUH? Who said anything about carrying a lot of weight? There's NO WAY I would ever strap 30 pounds on my back. My last trip up Whitney I carried 8 pounds full load. I day hiked Onion Valley to Kings Canyon and back in 23 hours with 20 pounds. Even when I did 76 miles in 48 hours in Kings Canyon last year I only has 23 pounds.

The only big weight additions for this years Whitney attempt are trekking poles and cheap Yak Trax because of the current snow situation.

I don't see how 40-50 ounces of water is a lot to carry at once when you have no solid idea where your fill ups are..............................DUG

My bad. Somehow I read POUNDS instead of ounces. I was thinking you were going overnight and packing heavy. Maybe I need new glasses. Sorry.

Oh. LOL - 30-40 pounds would keep me supplied for weeks.

This info was spot on perfect and exactly what we needed! Much thanks. Started up South Ridge at 0330 with a team of 6. 5 training for Friday's Whitney dayhike and one tagging along. Everyone had ay least 70 ounces of water just in case. We made the summit and were all pretty low by the time we got back to this excellant water source. Everyone pulled 50-60 ounces for the trip down and we repeatly filled a 20 ounce water bottle and I had everyone drink all of it before we left. Peak and the trail were less crowded than on my MM hike last Saturday. Still a little snow on top but we had fun plowing through it.............................DUG
