Rush hour hiking

Howdy All :)

On Saturday, I went from the tram to the peak, then down to Willow Creek crossing (via Hidden Divide). After summiting, I was going to drop down from Wellman's to Saddle Junction and come back up via Willow Creek crossing but didn't feel up to that.

It was wonderful to run into numerous friends on the first tram -- Doreen the Skyline Queen, Indie Jack and his sons, Hengst Joe, and Indio Joe. Thanks to Hengst Joe for waiting for me on the climb -- it's nice to have moral support when you don't feel good.

The summit was so packed that we opted to hang out in the dirt area to the west. I met NickSJM on the descent and warned him about the crush of people on top. When I reached Wellman's, I saw more people there than I've ever seen before

It was wonderful to get off the main trail after Round Valley. Ah, quiet at last. Ran into three rangers checking the Round Valley loop --apparently lots of people from the tram didn't have permits  Ran into two guys at the trail crossing and gave them directions to Round Valley.

The trail through Hidden Divide Preserve was also relatively peaceful -- I could finally hear the sounds of nature. Enjoyed lunch at Willow Creek crossing, then headed back up. Ran into to two young adults going down who were in tennis shoes -- asked them where they were going and they said they had no idea :? Indie Jack caught me at the trail crossing and we headed to the tram together.

Snow Creek Steve came into the boarding area to say "hi" after climbing up [guess where from the his picture]

Came up Marion Mountain with my son. We hit the summit before 10 and there were only a few people on top. When we headed out a short while later the crowds started coming in. I assumed they were all from the tram, but I was surprised to see huge groups all along the trail, including a group of 10-15 hiking single file through Little Round Valley. Marion Mountain was a popular trail Saturday...................DUG

Last Saturday a group of 18 from the OCHC (most of whom I've hiked with before) did the Marion to SJP and back route. This is a very respectful group, and I know the hike organizer, a very cool guy. I hope they were as polite as usual? I like hiking during the week to avoid Rush Hour weekends.

On a side note, I wrote the columnist from the OC Register, David Whiting, to see if he will or can help out with the DWA issue. We'll see if he responds to me, I do have some association with him, keep your fingers crossed.

Hi Ellen!
It sure does sound a like it gets a bit crowded on weekends up there. You mentioned a couple of places I'm not familiar with - Willow Creek crossing and Hidden Divide. I would sure like to check them out.
Having Wednesdays off is a mixed blessing for me. It's hard to find a hiking buddy, but I don't run into crowds. Last Wednesday I saw a total of 10 people when I took Deer Springs trail to the peak.
Maybe we can get together next Wednesday (tomorrow I've got stuff to do at home.)

Beating the Rush Hour Hike Traffic

Postby afaraday » Fri Jun 25, 2010 5:04 pm

The trick to beat as much as possible (but certainly not all) of the traffic is to get off the beaten path and tackle peaks like Folly, Druy, Jean, Marion, Cornell, etc.

I did tramway to peak today (Sunday) taking the 8:40a car up. I beat most of the crowd to the peak and going up the trails didn't seem especially busy. On my way down ran into a lot of upward-bound hikers but things quieted down again below Wellman's. Ran into Bluerail (who had actually ridden up on the tram today) and met Norris for the first time. Was a lovely hike.
