Marmot, can't say I've heard of many folks trying it north bound as you stated but either way that traverse as Lee pointed out is one hell of a trek. I'm not speaking from experience but I've been in those hills a bit and wouldn't recommend an attempt in anything but the coolest (without too much snow) conditions. The biggest obstacle is the amount of water you need to carry unless you cache some ahead of time.
On your question of the machete. From my experience there are few hikes where swinging a machete is less fatiguing that charging through in a long sleeved shirt. They do work well if your trying to cut trail, but for back country travel I'd pass.
