I have The Man Who Walked Through Time and The Thousand Mile Summer. And of course The Complete Walker. Don't know about the cave book but i'm a volunteer at the PS library so will check!

Florian,

You will enjoy it. It is a detective story of sorts. Fletcher found a trunk in a cave near the Colorado River, and decided to find out who the owner was. Eventually he ended up in Palm Springs during his quest. Characters even included Howard Weiffels.

Most of it takes place in the Coachella Valley!! It is out of print, but the PS Library used to have it on the shelf years ago. Don't know if they still have it.

Hi Nick,

The library does indeed still have the book and i'm now reading it! I'm going to plan a hike up to Chuckwalla Bill's cabin after the summer. Thanks for tipping me off the the book.

Glad to hear you found it.

I haven't been in Long Canyon in probably 20 years or more. The side canyon is on the left if you enter from the Desert Hot Springs area. It is not easy to recognize, as it is not real well defined, and as I remember you really need to pass it a little and then looking back it is really obvious. Sometimes the spring beyond the cabin is flowing, but you usually have to fight the bees for water :)

It's on the topo labeled as Chuckwalla Bill Spring and says ruins. Will be a nice wintertime hike.

That must be a new topo. Back in the day, it was not marked on the USGS maps with a name.

First time I found it, I had not read the book yet. I wonder if it has been vandalized (more) since the last time I was there.

Fletcher mentions it's not on the topo too. I use Nat Geo TOPO program and the info for the quad says 1989.
