To Quilt or Not

Postby WoofDoggy » Tue Jun 15, 2010 4:27 pm

Returning to backpacking after many years off, and looking into this relatively "new to me" concept of sleeping with a quilt instead of a regular sleeping bag. Any comments yea/nea? Saw the Ray-Way site where you can even make your own for only $100 from a kit. What a concept.

Thanks for any advice. Planning on Fuller Ridge to Little Round Valley in late July.

I suffered for years with mummy style bags, unzipping and using them as a quilt as I don't like being confined. Two years ago I purchased the GoLite Ultra 20 and have been a happy sleeper since. Weighs just over 1 lb and for me a warm sleeping works quite well as I tend to toss and turn throughout the night. Mummy bags have since been passed along to nephews and friends. Here is one test review I found:

I can't say I've tested the product, but... how to pee without getting up.

I'll take the extra 10 ounces to have my bag. My ultralight friends use quilts, but I guess I'm not there yet, at least while there's snow on the ground. I tend to unzip in the summer though!

I open up my bag in hot weather but zip it in cold.

I've got a 19 oz WM Summerlite bag. A quilt might save me a couple of ounces, but a good quilt is big $$'s. Not quite ready to shell out the bucks for a couple of ounces just yet.
