Current Trail condition for C2C?

Postby kdogg » Tue Jun 08, 2010 2:14 pm

Anyone know what the trail condition currently is for the C2C trail? Wondering if there is still snow or ice, especially on the steep portions of the trail.

If by C2C you mean the Skyline trail portion from Palm Springs to Long Valley (tramway) there is no snow. See some of the other reports in the this forum for snow on areas near the peak.

Thanks! I appreciate the update. Yes, I do mean the Cactus to the Clounds trail (Skyline) and am referring to the portion from base of palm springs to tramway. So that is good news that there is no snow. Should I assume there is no ice either in this portion? I know on another website it recommends bringing and ice axe and crampons in spring and fall, but would rather not have to go and rent these items. Also, do you know where I can find a good map of this trail. I have a general idea of where to start the trail, but I have heard it is easy to get lost. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks!

No winter gear is needed below the Tram at this point -- snow and ice are non-issues.

I know of no published maps, but one can find unofficial ones.

kdogg,

Just a word of caution ... It's getting very hot in the desert this time of year. If you've never hiked the Skyline before you might want to consider waiting until temps cool down in the fall. Otherwise if you do go be SURE to carry at least 6 quarts of water. The trail is hot and exposed and unforgiving.

Thanks AlanK and Florian for the info. Glad to know that there is no snow or ice going from base to tram.

Florian, what time would you suggest getting started on the trail in the morning? Also, thanks for the info on the water. Will be sure to take that amount.

Depending on your hiking speed a 4am start would get you to around the 6000' level by 8am and into the cooler trees by 9am. That's my hiking speed on the Skyline and 4am is when i'd start. But unless you're used to hiking steep trails in hot desert conditions i'd strongly suggest you wait until after temps cool in the fall.

Florian's time is fast,

plan on atleast seven-eight hours for your first time up. Starting at 4 am, or earlier is a good idea. The sun rises around 5:30 now.

Have a nice trip!

Please consider Florians warning well. This was a cool weekend but it was unusual. the temperatures on the trail will be hot even in the early morning. rescues have already been significant this spring, unless you are in very good shape and either live in the heat or train in it, I would really consider waiting until the weather cools off. maybe October. Please search back on the posts about heat related fatalities last summer.
