Seeking tram info

Postby LeslieL » Wed May 30, 2007 5:20 pm

Hello,

Anyone know the phone number to get a live person at the tram station? Or perhaps someone has the information I'm seeking: I'd like to take the first tram up on Saturday - according to the recording the first car departs at 8:00 a.m. Does the lower tram station open earlier than 8:00 to sell tickets?

Thanks!
Leslie

Hi Leslie. Yes, you should have plenty of time to get your ticket. I've only taken the tram up a few times, but when I have I typically get there 15-20 minutes early and the place seems to be in full operation. This trip should be a lot easier than your Skyline trip! Hope it's a fun one!

Hi Zip!

Thanks for the info. Yes, I'm looking forward to the easy trip from the tram... although we're training for Whitney so we'll carry about 40#. I've done the peak from Idyllwild, and Skyline, then Saturday we'll do the peak from the tram. When I run out of options I guess I'll have to do a full C2C

See ya,
Leslie

If you can do Skyline, you can probably already do Whitney. Well, you can make it to the top of Whitney. Remember, the top is only halfway on Whitney! Still, my Skyline time is almost exactly my Whitney ascent time. There's actually more elevation gain on Skyline, but there's less air on Whitney (which you'll probably notice after Trail Crest) so it balances out. I'll probably do Whitney in early September. When is your group going?

tram hours

Postby LAMike » Thu May 31, 2007 8:50 am

Hi,
it's time for the summer hours so now they'll be open later. Last car down is like around 10:30. I was there last weekend at 7am and they were open for business.

Great, I think I'll plan to arrive at about 7:30.

Zip, we are doing Whitney August 3 & 4. If all goes well I'll summit on my 45th birthday! This is my first Whitney attempt, first backpacking trip and first time over 11,500 feet (SanG) - so I'm nervous and excited with altitude being my biggest concern. We'll camp at Horsehoe Meadows one night and trail camp the next so I hope that makes a difference. I've been getting great info from the Whitney Portal Store board and I think I'm as ready as I'll ever be ;)

Zip - that's seems correct. It think my time going up Skyline Trail and my time going up the Whitney via Main Trail would probably be close. I move really slow above 11, 000 feet. Last time I did Whitney it was 8 hours up and 5 down. I might do Whitney again on the 16th. Maybe I'll do it in 7 hours next time.

Leslie - just take your time on Whitney and drink lots of fluids - you'll do fine.

Get a summer pass

Postby halhiker » Sun Jun 03, 2007 10:21 pm

If you're going to the Tram on Saturday, you can get a summer pass for $50. Since you're only a couple of hours away, if you take a couple more trips up this summer it'll be worth it.

Check into that annual pass as well. For the price of 4 trips you can wander up there for free all year long.
