Sat June 2 -- who's on?

Howdy All

I'm planning on Skyline Saturday June 2, leaving early (2 to 3 AM?). Like Cynthia, my body would prefer to start later but I want to gain some elevation before the sun comes out.

I'll be at a conference in Palm Springs on Sunday and will be spending the night in town Saturday night. This gives me the opportunity to hike, eat at Las Consuelas, shower and crash without the drive back to Riverside. Yippee!!!

MagikWalt -- I'd love to meet you. Can you go this Saturday?

Hi Ellen. I might go, but I also might do the run they have in Idyllwild or the Fontana Days Run. I ran my first 5k at the Run through Redlands, and the short distance was kinda fun. It's amazing when you're done in just a few minutes, especially since we're used to Skyline trying to kill us for several hours at a time!

I'd like to get at least one more Skyline trip in before the summer hiatus, though, so I'm probably 50/50. If I do, I hope to see you and the rest of the regulars!

Hi Ellen - I am planning on going between 1 and 2 am. Friends of mine from Santa Barbara are leaving at 12.30 am and going to the peak. It takes us eight hours to the tram.

Hi folk --

I'd like to do this, but it would be my first time. How much time do you plan to take getting as far as the tram station? I'm not in top shape, and I wouldn't want to slow anyone down. Is it true that the trail is easier to follow up the 2nd 4000 ft ? I'll 3000 ft or so tomorrow (Wednesday). What's the elevation of the warning sign?

Howdy Nate

I recommend that you do you first trip with an experienced Skyline hiker such as Cy. Two reasons -- you'll have alot more fun and you won't lose the trail.

Cy noted that he's leaving between 1 and 2 AM and will take about 8 hours. I'll leave at 2 to 3 AM and take about 6.5 hours to the tram. There's another post on the forum about the altitude gain on sections of Skyline. I'll see if I can find it.

The first three miles of Skyline gain about 3000 feet, the next six gain only about 2500 feet, the second last mile gains about 1600 feet, and the last mile about 900 feet. The middle portion is almost the same as the part above the tram.

My group from Santa Barbara will be leaving the museum around 12:30am. We have done the hike before, and are familiar with the entire trail. I am sure that Cy will catch us somewhere along the way, as he will be starting just after 1:00am. If anyone wants to join our group of five to six, be at the museum just before 12:30am.

Anyone heading all the way up tomorrow? I have to be in Westwood tomorrow by 3:00pm so no way for me to summit unless Stan and Perry are going to carry me. Yes, it would take both of them.

Seven of us left the museum at 12.30am and took us nine hours to Long Valley. Ellen passed us at 5000 ft, and Zippedydude and MagicWalt passed after Flatrock. The rest of my group went for the peak. It was warm and humid in Palm Springs but cooled off after half way.
