No doubt they emptied the water cache and still had to call for help. People just don't get how hard and hot a hike it is. Perhaps a larger more severely worded warning sign at the bottom would help.

The hikers, who were dehydrated, were identified as William Beckwith Sr., William Beckwith Jr. and Daniel Beckwith.

Is this the father and son team that posted earlier this week?

That's what I first thought but I think they decided the heat was going to be oppressive and asked about going somewhere else that would be cooler. I hope they took heed.

With the temperature now escalating quickly it might be wise for repeat Skyliners to refrain from posting about their latest Skyline excursion. It won't give newbies anything to latch onto (like times boasting how quickly the trail can be completed) and I don't know about anyone else but I get tired of reading the same TR over and over and over and over again.

Looks like another long summer for RMRU.

Over the past year or so, I have visited this forum to check on trail conditions (snow), and have found it to be a valuable resource.

This forum and the escalating number of trail guides with Skyline descriptions, are a double-edged sword. Both provide useful information, and in turn popularize the trail, attracting people who are not prepared, skilled, or in physical condition to undertake the hike.

Once on the trail, there are enough warnings about the difficulties of the hike. Also, if anyone reads through the many posts here, it is obvious that the frequent hikers post enough information for any reasonably intelligent person to grasp the seriousness of poor planning and potentially dangerous weather conditions. No matter what is posted or not posted here, the Darwin Award candidates are still going to try it.

the helicopter sure was busy at flatrock today....they picked up one woman (Ava) and looked like they were doing more...I'm sure it will be out soon.

Hi Hal,

I agree in concept except i doubt if most/any of the people that get into Skyline trouble are readers of this forum. But you do make a good point. And i like reading the trip reports.

it is not the father and son team from earlier this week. They were smart and deciced to not go.

Hal, why do read them? :0) ....and your right, once again it is that time of year.

Skyline shouldn't even be an inviting thought for the next several months, only idiots and fools would think about doing it in the heat thats arrived.

I just can't get over what went on up there today and the amount of people that got caught in the heat. I was stunned to see the amount of cars in the parking lot this morning and a fool to think they would have all been serious and prepared...

Steve,

I usually don't read them unless they are reporting the snow conditions or are you and Fern are doing another crazy out of the ordinary adventure. Other than that it's just the same old, same old.

But other people read them and since the regulars know what to expect and enjoy suffering it gives the wrong impression to people like those who keep having to get rescued.

I guess I'm just saying that unless a TR has something beyond the normal to report than it's really not worth reporting.
