if your going all the way to the peak, bring crampons, they will make the climb up the ridge to the peak easier. It is still in snow from Tamarack up and it's very slippery in the afternoon sun. we had micros and wished we'd had bigger spikes to make it easier.

So you had kahtoola microspikes, and they didn't seem enough?

I have two pairs of full aluminum crampons with front points; the trouble is that it is hard to keep them on light shoes. Part of the problem is the strapping around the ankle; the other is the flexion of softer-soled light hiking boots. Right now, the lightest boots I have -- that I would trust with full crampons -- are about 2.6 lbs/pair.

It's looking less and less likely I'll get down there, but it's still nice to dream.

Howdy folks,

Hope everyone is ready for a fun filled night, and it breaks my heart to say that I won't be going with you. About 2 weeks ago, I got a DPT vaccination, and for the last 10 days I've been fighting off flu-like symptoms. I won't bore you (or gross you out) with the details, but it has left me as weak as a kitten. I don't think I could walk 5 miles on level ground, let alone 12 miles with 8000 feet of uphill. My heart and my ego say "go for it", and I feel as if I'm letting you folks down, but at this point, it would be foolish for me to try to "run a marathon" up the mountain. If I feel up to it, I hope to be at the museum tomorrow night to see you folks off, and to be at the tram Saturday morning, to help shuttle people back to their cars. My family and I are moving back to PS next month, and my original idea was to use this event to meet a group of like minded people that also love to do what I do. I still hope to do that. Now I think I'll crawl back into bed.

Sincerely and with best regards,

Skunk

PS. I have an old pair of Salewa crampons (circa 1978), that need a good home. If anyone is interested, they can have them. They require a rand on the boot, so trail-runners won't work. I'll bring them to the museum tomorrow night.

Oh Skunk, I am so sorry that you won't be joining us  I was looking forward to hiking with you. Absolutely understand that you don't want to be miserable on Skyline -- the trail is hard enough when one is healthy. We'll have plenty of opportunities to hike together soon. Sending healing thoughts your way 8)

Roll Call for Moonlight Skyline Hike

Postby Ellen » Thu May 27, 2010 11:10 am

Howdy All :)

So, who's on and what time are people starting?

I thought it might be nice to get an idea in case hikers of similar paces want company.

I am really looking forward to this! Can you tell?

Once I get to my car, I am happy to go back to the lower tram station and ferry people to their cars. I've done this in the past.

Howdy Don :)

Sorry your car prevented you from joining me on the snowy Skyline. Looks like we'll have more typical Skyline conditions this Saturday morning.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

There is an unconfirmed rumor that there may be a cameo appearance by a couple of us wintertime foolz, too! 1:00 ish, for sure.

Skunk, I'm sorry to hear your not feeling up to doing Skyline Sat. AM. But I would like you to know how very thankful I am that you got the ball rolling on this adventure. I hope to get to meet you at the trailhead.

Ellen, I will be starting with you of course. Should I be there at 12:00 or 1:00? (or ?)
