I was thinking about this too. I'm slower than many hikers on this forum but if i push starting at midnight i would finish a couple hours before the tram opens. I don't like cold so have no desire to arrive before the tram station is open. My plan is to just hike easy, visit with people, enjoy the views, restock the water cache at 5700', and generally take my time. I've never done the trail in the dark, except for the very beginning, and i just want to savor it knowing there is no rush. I even bought a new headlamp for the occasion!

how much water do you plan on putting in the cache? I would be willing to carry some (1/2 gallon) to put in there to help fill it up..

Hello all,
Just posting for the first time here but I have been monitoring these forums regularly. My girlfriend and I will be hiking San jacinto c2c Saturday morning at about 0300. Were from Arizona, and hve hiked extensively throughout that state. Not in California, though we will hike more of Cali later this month. We've never done Jacinto, but it looks beautiful from I-10. Does anyone know if there's a reasonable place to camp Friday night near the museum? We will be driving from southern arizona and will head to LA after the hike for the weekend. Also, will anyone be taking the tram back down? What is the best way to get back to the museum?

I'm planning to leave 4 20 oz bottles. Since we're hiking at night when it's cooler i won't be drinking as much on the trail as usual so shouldn't be a problem to carry extra this trip.

Not exactly near the museum but you might consider camping in Joshua Tree national park. The south entrance off of I10 is on your way. From the Cottonwood campground to the museum is about 50 miles and will take around an hour to drive. I camp there often in the summer for stargazing. I'll send you more details in a private message.

My wife will pick me up at the valley station Saturday morning after the hike. We'll have room to drive 3 extra bodies back to PS.

Sounds kinda like you're friends with the Dread Pirate Roberts: There will be no survivors! My question is, how much room will you have for live passengers?

Thanks, Florian, for always being so generous with your time, effort and gas to shuttle hikin' fools to and from the tram. I still owe you from my Snow Creek adventure.

I am looking forward to Saturday and meeting a few new faces and some of the familiar Skyline Addicts (not so) Anonymous. Three or four us us are leaving San Bernadino just before 11.00 pm. (Friday)

the argument from last year...everyone should treat the cache like its not there. I wouldnt even mention how much water is there or it's existence.

Howdy Hikin' Fools :)

I plan on starting between 12 AM and 1 AM.

It will be wonderful to meet new folks and reconnect with my San J friends.

Howdy Z-dude :)

I love "The Princess Bride." Great flick 8)

Howdy All :)

I concur with Snow Creek Steve -- the [fragile cache] is for emergencies.

Several years ago, someone raided a friend's stash of fluids. Not only did they drink his stash, they left the darn bottles

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

For all the way to the top? On the slim chance that I make it down there this weekend... I was considering taking a whippet (a ski pole with an ice axe head) and neoprene socks with trail runners.

Can one get water at the ranger station/tram?
