C to Tram Sunday May 23rd

Postby Mountaingoat » Thu May 20, 2010 10:19 pm

Please to all Saturday hikers on this board. Let me know, what the conditions are on the upper section (coffmans area), after your hike. Planning to leave at 4:30 AM Sunday.

Have done C to C about 25 times over the last 10 years.

Much appreciated, The "Goat"

Howdy Mountain Goat :)

You'll have no problems finding the trail at the traverse and from Coffman's on up. Have a great hike -- I'm tempted to go back out tomorrow to take advantage of the cool weather.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

About tomorrow - Michael Mojarro posted this on the San G board:

Didnt think id have to be posting anything on snowfall so close to summer but here it is folks. A rare almost unheard of winter storm is currently taking aim on the wilderness and will bring snow showers late tonight through the day Sunday with also the chance of a few snow thunderstorms. This unusual system has cold air that we would usually see in January with snow levels expected to fall to 4000 feet or lower sometime tomorrow. Since it is May and the ground has been warming for a while and we do have strong May sun rays any accumulation will be limited but a couple inches certainly could fall in a few spots especially on the north slopes above 8000 feet. Winds which have already gusted over 60mph today in the mountains will continue through tomorrow. Overall this storm is not strong for mid winter standards but its very strong for a May storm and very cold and all hikers need to take warning of the incoming winter weather Sunday. Nightime temps Sunday night may drop into the lower 10s in the colder valleys above 8000 feet.

Ellen, I know this is your kind of weather! How much fun would that be, to have it lightly snowing on you as you top out on Skyline - at the end of May.

Goat, Ellen's exactly right - the snow presents no problem whatsoever (right now, anyway).

If either of you go, I hope you'll post a TR!

Thanks Ellen and Zip for the beta and little weather report. Look forward to the hike tomorrow. Will be leaving a little later than previously planned, since the temps should be very favorable, after dropping my bike at the Tram Station.
Probably around 7:00 AM. Hope to see you on the trail Ellen.

Light rain sprinkles in Palm Springs this morning and the upper tram station is in the clouds. Hope anyone going up today is prepared for cold and wet.

Desertweather.com is reporting Palm Springs should beat the record today for the minimum high temperature. The old record stands at 80 degrees set back in 1995.

We met a couple of hikers on their way to Little Round Valley (location of rescue) to camp.

I can believe cold and stormy. I left Palm Springs this morning heading back to the coast via Hwy 74. At the top of the pass the clouds where not much above me, it was windy and there were a few rain showers. More rain west of the mountains.
