Hello everybody

My friend and I would like to leave between 3-5 a.m. Is there anyone leaving around this time? We're first timers. If there is no one who meets us at the start of the climb and once we get to a certain elevation, will be there enough ascending traffic to help us in case we get lost?

I'd think there'd be enough others going up on Saturday to direct you if you have any questions about the route. Below 6500' the route is obvious. Once you get to the trees there are a couple of spots that might be confusing. Just keep looking up and remember you go north for a while before the final steep climb to the notch.

Terry,
The Museum tr. is loaded with short-cuts & switchbacks, with head-lamps it's not easy, (of course, up is always good), although there is a slight downhill on the south slope that heads down slightly about 10-15 mins in.

Starting from Ramon Rd. is easier to follow in the dark, about 1/2 mile (15+ mins.) longer.
From Museum, you'll hit picnic benches 1k vertical ft., veer slightly left (SW), trail goes slightly up, then a little down, then to tr. jct. (where the Ramon tr, actually called N Lykken) comes in on the left. Head slightly north, look for white lettering on boulders, here head SW & your on your way.
There are more short-cuts along the trail, most are either silly 10 ft. swithback cutters, or steep ones which bump your heart-rate up but save little time.

I'll be heading up just before sunrise, maybe see you along the way.

Terry and Pierre, guest is right, the Ramon Rd. trailhead is a much easier way to follow, but a longer start. I know Florian likes it, and my family and I love it to go for short hikes up to the picnic tables. In the early spring the wildflowers go crazy and if you're lucky and the wind is right, you can smell the pizza's at CPK when they're cooking. The museum start is the more traditional start. But I digress. Both guest and Florian are right about looking up. If you do get off route, stop and go back to where you last saw the trail, and look up. You will usually see it. When you get into the trees, keep heading toward Coffman Crag. When you get there, turn left, and look up. Grubbs notch is straight up, with the trail winding it's way up.

A couple of years ago this advice from zippetydude was useful to me in the dark. I don't know if it still holds and I'll find out on Saturday :)

When I come to a split, always take the one on the right. There are only a couple of places where it cuts off to the right and doesn't go anywhere, and they're only about 10 feet long, so you won't waste much time on them.

So far we haven't decided on a start time other than "early"

That's still the best advice. Also, people new to the Museum Trail sometimes head in the wrong direction after reaching the small cairn shortly after the picnic tables. Quite a few head down towards Ramon by mistake. When you get to the cairn, turn right and go uphill...

Hello everyone

I made it. Many thanks to all who helped along the way. To those on this site and to the ones on the trail. It was rough, but doable. Now that I have done it, I'll think I'll write my memoirs. God richly bless.
