Adventure passes

Postby Florian » Sat May 15, 2010 3:43 pm

I have a couple of day-use forest service adventure passes that i used last year. I scraped off the month/day for the date i used them. What would stop me from using them again on the same dates this year? Not saying i would or anything. But there's nothing on the pass that shows the year right?

Hi Florian. I think they rely on a system sort of like the honor system, only it's more like the nuisance system. For the amount of money that a person can save, the nuisance factor comes into play. If you misplace it, or forget to bring it, or feel a little on edge changing the date, you're likely to spend the $5 to get another than to improvise. I bet if the price were $20, there would be a whole lotta people "recycling" their passes! Not that I pass judgment on others for this sort of creativity: All for one, one for all, and everybody against the government!

Don't they change the colors every year?

Anyone willing to spend $more than $200 bucks on a pair of high-end hiking boots or an expensive piece of outdoor clothing made in China or Malaysia should cowboy up and pay his / her $5 bucks. When the system finally fails and we live in Mad-Max world (mohawks, football pads, and 24/7 road rage), I'll totally support recycling passes (if they're still required).

If you have the annual National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, you're covered and don't need an additional Adventure Pass.

My boots cost $39 at Walmart. I'm serious.

I don't think the color changes. And besides i could have bought one last year and not actually activate it until years later.
