Mark,
CTC is a death march, and I'm really not exaggerating. It's nearly 11,000 feet vertical gain. If you don't have an immediate intuitive sense of just how insane that kind of vertical gain is, then that's probably a good indication that this might not be a good pick for your first hike in the area. If you think running marathons is child's play and a 12 mile run is "a good warm up," then you might be in the right league for a CTC.
Probably, a better first pick would be to take the Palm Springs Aerial Tram up to Long Valley which is about 8,000'. You'd then hike from there to Round Valley, Wellman Divide, and then San Jacinto Peak (10,800+), about 3,000' of gain. Most people think about 2,000' - 3,000' of gain is
plenty. If you pick a hot day, haven't hiked at altitude much, or aren't a regular hiker, just keep an eye on yourself and be prepared to turn back when your body says "enough." The whole wilderness is beautiful; I doubt you'll be disappointed.

P.S. The tram ride is worth the trip in and of itself.
