This Saturday, May 8th Re: Skyline Trail and conditions

Postby THETRACK » Mon May 03, 2010 11:47 am

Just wondering if anyone has the most updated conditions from Ramone Dr. to the Tram. We have our annual first of the season Skyline this weekend and we are wondering if the "all clear" sing is out from about 7000 to the end ( snow or ice ). Been enjoying the Posts from the beginning.

Thanks mi amigas and amigos

If you are hiking with Verdi's group, I read that they are probably postponing the annual hike for one week because of snow conditions.

condition

Hi Thetrack,
There's still plenty of snow above 7,500 ft. as of Sat.,and it's steep in many places.
Also, if you don't know this trail & area well, (at this elevation), you'll have a tough time getting to the ending point, (since there's no visable route or reliable footprints to follow).
Axe & cramp-ons were definitely needed to be safe, as are calm nerves & mountaineering experience.
The snow is melting fast, I'd give it 2 more weeks, (I may give other reports as conditions change).

I met you once about a year ago as you were motoring up............if you think this Sat is "junk", then I will not bother with the caravan unless I hear mattters chnage in the next few days.

Thanks

I hiked down about 3/4 mile from the notch yesterday (May 3). It's sludgy and very unpredictable on the traverse, but melting fast. Probably unpleasant this Saturday.

Targeting May 15th for hike to the tram

Postby Ardiner » Fri May 07, 2010 11:05 am

Sounds like the concensus is that the weekend of the 8th will be too soon. For those experienced with this trail, how likely is that the 1 week from now to next Saturday will see a big improvement.
