Did you know a CDF firefighter, Ralph Glenn? I was a fixture in the park for a couple years. If I wasn't skiing or hiking after work I was bouldering behind my house or hanging out with park aid buddies. One of the rescue cards in my game is from Bob Satch, a big red haired park aid. "Extra-large Range puts you in his backpack - Start Over. My personal fave "event" is, remember the pre-hyderation pack days, we had nagline and aluminum bottles? Well, one guy whither he had mild 'tude sickness or was just not thinking, he, "You stop and take a long swig from your fuel bottle". OW. sick puppy, lucky he did not aspirate any.
I lived in Snow Creek for three years in the the small concrete block one right at top of the loop. It was owned by the Hicks family which OWNED the DWA. and the mile of Snow Creek. I sent my rent checks to Santa Barbara. They owned the cottages of the caretaker and the other residence. The State park starts 200' from the back door. Also if you want a cooling off after other play days, there Is Los Osos to the west of Snow Creek. A short walk out the trail and you have a waterfall to rinse under. Runs all year. Great after bouldering on 110 degree days. There were many exciting times in those days. I'm sure it is "Same as it ever was" today.

Tony,
I didn't know Ralph Glenn, but I'm friends with the Jackson and the Davis families that live out there. In the early 70's the PS Mounted Police used to sponser an Explorer Troop that taught knuckleheaded high school kids, rescue techniques and climbing. Vince Jadilang (sp?) and Bob Claybrook took us up to Joshua Tree and introduced us to the basics. Rock climbing lead to hiking and backpacking which lead to mountaineering which lead to me and my friends walking by your house long ago. Good times.

Good story classvtony!
Wonder if that was the dog that got eaten by a mt. lion up there, which I hear made the caretaker so mad he attempted to track & shoot the lion, but they never found it!
Interesting how people think they can control nature. Even if you "own" land, what goes in & out of it can be illusive, even water...
