Sid Davis Route- 4-24-10

Postby Lcpl Hughes » Sun Apr 25, 2010 8:08 am

I wasn't sure on the conditions with the recent snowfall and hot temperatures, so I showed up at the tram parking lot early..I was hoping, maybe, I may recognize someone from this board and maybe even hike with him..
Guess who pulls up? Ellen and Lance..SWEET! I have read plenty of her TR's on this board and have only the highest respect for her. I didn't know much about Lance, but I learned in my travels with him that he is too cool and makes it all seem so effortless..I was a little shy at first to approach..but I did in the loading area and it was great swapping stories and me learning more about skyline..one of my new favorite subjects
Onto the hike, I ended up bringing my crampons and ice axe, but they just took a ride with me for the day..Lance wore microspikes the whole time, Ellen wore them about half of the way there, but the snow was balling up on the bottom of her feet so she took them off and just ended up booting it up, same as me..boots the whole way..the snow was fresh, mushy and was perfect to make wet hard snowballs..I had never been up the Sid Davis, so this was a treat for me..They both traded off the lead and knew the route well..the whole route was manageable and the last part coming up the side of San Jacinto from the Miller Saddle was fun, steep postholing in brand new snow up to the top, not slipping at all..looks like we were the first ones on top of the peak all week..Once on the peak, we chilled for a bit, talked about the different peaks around the area we could see and made our way back to the tram..I am pretty sure the total trip including the break on top was somewhere around 5 hours..

It was great meeting both of you :D..I am humbled and honored

We would of took a picture by the sign, but it was kinda impossible..ha

one thing I might add, that I thought was kinda interesting..about 3/4's of the way into the hike, nausea came over me and I had to puke, and did ..even had a great dry heave ..as recommended by Ellen, I scooped up some snow and cleaned my mouth out and made the final push to the summit..that has never happened to me, ever..but was still interesting enough to add here..

Howdy Don :)

It was wonderful to have your company on the way up San J yesterday -- thanks so much for joining us 8) It's clear that you love this mountain and fit right in with the crazy bunch of hikin' fools that make up this forum. I look forward to hiking Skyline with you once the snow melts off the traverse.

I am always astomished at how hot one can get hiking in fresh snow -- that stretch up the Miller Saddle to the ridge and then to the summit was a butt kicker. I couldn't believe how the snow seemed to get deeper the closer we got to the summit :x All that work sure made the Mexican food and beer taste better

See you on the trail soon.

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Great TR! It's fun to run into people from the board on the tram and get to hike with them. It was a beautiful weekend. Glad you got to enjoy it while there was a nice blanket of fresh white snow. I'm sure a great time was had by all!
