Desert Water Agency illegally hassling hikers at Snow Creek

General Palm Springs area.

Postby asabat » Tue Apr 20, 2010 2:23 pm

I fully understand all the bad feelings here, and can't understand the nighttime ambush, but... please keep in mind the same Desert Water Agency provides a drinking fountain at the bottom of the Pacific Crest Trail, 20 miles from the last on-trail water source when northbound. This water source is critical for PCT thruhikers, many of whom have their pictures taken at this location. Clearly this generousity is not the work of an evil empire.

Hopefully a legal route can be established (sounds like we're on our way) and the permit situation can be resolved as well.

Again, I'm not defending any scare tactics, but I'm appreciative of the water supply that DWA provides hikers.

This TR was almost as long as your ascent.

Good TR.

I agree they're not an evil empire, I just wish they realized how we feel about the land and how we rely on it's natural resources. I bring no fluids with me when I leave my vehicle, I rely completely on that water.

....and it's goood too

So does that mean I shouldn't piss in it anymore?

Snow Creek at any time of the year.

In 1979 I was coming back from a day hike through the DWA down the road when the caretakers (at that time a Riverside SO) German Shepherd without barking ran out and put a lock on my Rt forearm. I still have the 1.5 inch scar. I had my rope and rack over my shoulder and was carrying my Gibbs helmet. The one that looked like a bowling ball. I broke that helmet on the dogs head. He was still out when I looked back. A trip to the ER to fix the visible tendon exhibit, 30 days in the pound for the dog, oops no rabies tag, and a pissed SO up the street. I lived in Snow Creek then. They hassled me every time they saw me. One time coming down Falls drainage a guy called me out and said, "Hey we send this to Palms Springs for drinking!" I told him, "Probably should take the dead badger out of the pool just above us then".

I second that. Thanks Tony. So you lived in Snow Creek in 79? Cool. My climbing buddies and I probably walked right by your house on our way up the mountain in April of 79. I have two good friends that live out there now. It's a very cool place to live. You'll have the PCT'ers going through on their way to Canada right now. My friends help them out when they can, and have a lot of funny/cool stories. Thanks for your story.

Sincerely
Skunk
