C2C2C?? thoughts? anyone interested?

That's cactus (museum) to clouds (San Jac summit) to cactus (back down to the museum) for those of you who don't know...and it's 34 miles that will kick your ass physically and challenge your mental capacity too! Especially the endless downhill.

The best time to do this is mid-late September at the earliest to early-mid October at the latest, so the window is relatively small. The cactus to clouds hike was ranked by Backpacker Magazine as the fifth toughest day hike in the United States! So you can imagine how much more difficult this is when you come ALL THE WAY BACK DOWN. It's gonna hurt, but its a rewarding pain :D

With that said this is not to be taken lightly and is deceptively difficult and dangerous for the ill prepared. So you all know that your physical preparation is essential. When I did this a couple years ago I had a water cache at about the 4500' marker...crutial, as by this point on the way down it's warming up and there is no water from long valley down to the museum.

The good news is that you can always bail out at the tram either on the way up to the summit or after you summit and are on your way back down to long valley. So it's very important to make sure there is no scheduled maintenance on the tram for the day selected  so this option is available.

Any thoughts on this? I don't hear too much about doing C2C2C on this blog and thought it would be fun to get a group to do it. I know it's endlessly boring and "flat" (compared to the hike up to long valley) from LV up to the summit but this hike is all about elevation gain/loss, the miles and the downhill...did I mention the downhill :?:

Hi SD. I've done it, but I turn right at the cairn (just before the picnic tables on your way down) and pop out over at Ramon. It avoids the steepest, rocky section there before the museum. It's a little longer, but if you were looking for a short hike, you wouldn't be doing this anyway! Stop by Maraca's on your way back - a cold beer and chips is less than $5.00 - which beats the Tram Bar by about half.

I'm wondering when Skyline is going to be passable without the need of winter gear. When are you thinking about going - fall, or sometime soon?

Hi Z...I'm thinking of either Saturday September 25th or Saturday October 9th (i have plans on Saturday October 2nd)...leaving at 2am sharp (Saturday morning) dropping water cache at 4500' for on the way down later that day. Get to long valley by appx 7am or 8am at the latest. Fill up water here at ranger station and proceed on to the summit. Reach SJ summit by appx 9:30am or 11am at the latest. Enjoy summit for about a half hour. start back down for long valley and stop at ranger station to fill up on water. (last chance to bail out here for the leisurly tram ride option back down-no shame in this btw)...reach water cache and resupply and head back to museum parking lot. Be back down at museum by appx 6-7pm. That's that, nothing to it

I'm in, but I'll be moving along slowly - I'll probably start earlier and end later than anyone else doing it.

Sorry, but my knees cannot handle that kind of downhill.

Only if you want to die a slow, horrible death. Coming back down in August, with temps above 110 would be miserable.

Going up could be fun if you start early, but you'd probably want to borrow Walt's umbrella and my Misty Mate.
