How bad are the bugs in the San Jacinto Wilderness? I don't remember having any problems with them last June when I hiked, but I was wondering if there are other times of the year when some bug repellent would be a good idea.

Creepy Crawlies

Bugs are not as bad in the San Jacinto wilderness as in some parts of the country, but it only takes one mosquito or tick to "bug" me, so I try to have repellant with me during all but the coldest weather.

I've never used any and never been bit. San J is one of the few areas where you can say that. I'm with neverwashasbeen, bugs can ruin a trip. When we camp in the summer, we usually go to Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite - no mosquitoes in August up there. We went to Mammoth a couple of years ago. It's a beautiful area, but back in the Devils Postpile area the bugs drove me mad! Enjoy your trip, you should be pretty much safe from the annoyance.

In all honesty, i get bit like crazy, some say its because i eat too much sugar and they like my blood. Any rate, i will wear repellent from may until sept. on all the mountains. i think i am the only one that gets bit doing skyline in may/june...go figure.
