Total STUPIDITY

I had to share this because i still can't believe it. I was up at the tram station Saturday talking with Craig and Patrick, they were telling me that some guy came up last week in tennis shoes and shorts. REALLY? His legs were cut up and he freezing from head to toe. the stupidest part about this story, the guy is a doctor, ignorance comes in all shapes and sizes.
If you don't know what you are doing, don't climb 8200 feet from the desert floor with snow conditions starting at 6000 feet.
Its not brain surgery! Pun intended.

I don't know, Tina...I mean, he made it, didn't he? (I didn't see anything in your post about SAR, so I'm assuming he did it under his own power.)

It was dangerous to do it in the snow, I agree, but maybe there were deep enough tracks where he could pass through the traverses fairly safely. Kinda wacky, but then, I know of a few wacky people who came down the north face of Yucaipa Ridge one afternoon in a section that's not too far from vertical...!

As the weather warms up, though, there's a very real danger that the snow up on the top of Skyline will go through a few freeze/thaw cycles and turn into deadly ice, and tennis shoes just won't cut it then.

Yeah, you guys did have appropriate equipment and had planned the whole thing out correctly.

"I think I'll try that Skyline trail thingy, and hopefully I won't slide off the mountain and kill myself" is not appropriate planning!

Most of us have been stupid a few times when in the mountains. At least I know I have.

My first time up San Gorgonio was in the snow. When someone mentioned to me that I should have crampons on that trip, I asked them what crampons were. I try not to encourage stupid behavior, but I don't always refrain from it.

Honestly, I cant believe someone would continue on through that crap in shorts and tennis shoes.

but you know he'll be telling that near death story for awhile.

blood and trail mix

Postby Bivouac » Thu Mar 18, 2010 3:18 pm

Some of us get a little too close to the trail at times you know....think some of us have probably left a little blood on most of our frequented trails...that Dr probably felt a suture free hike was quite successful...
Hike in the Alaska midnight sun, ascend 10K ft through Haleakala on Maui...email me at sidsprojects@yahoo.com
