1st place in a 50 mile --wow.
Not what it sounds like... I had never run over 15 miles before, and that distance only once, the weekend before the event. Day of the race I was the slowest off the start, did not catch anyone for 5 miles. I stopped at every rest stop and ate hardy... and was run/walking along, taking my time. The initial 15 miles was up hill including the first of a long, steeper climb of 2,000'+... I passed everyone on that first climb, not because I was fast, but because they all ran themselves into the ground! There was a total of over 8,000' of climbing on that course, and I was trained up to do 12,000' climbs on my hiking, so no problem. It did feel great to be winning an event at age 50, but if viewed correctly it was very much about who was not there that day... I was still fresh as a daisy at the end of the event, even after getting lost and running an additional three miles! Road a century bike ride the next day.
A day like that will not happen again... ultra's have come into their own...
