Snow conditions

Postby Bigwookie009 » Wed Feb 17, 2010 2:07 pm

Just wondering if anyone has been near Spitler peak or Apache peak recently I am planning on going hopefully this Friday. How low in elevation is the snow right now and how much snow up to about 7500 feet?

Thanks for any help :D

The Desert Divide where Spitler is has snow on it - probably down to at least 6000' depending on sun exposure and there's more snow coming tomorrow night. The snow level is supposed to drop to 5500' on Friday night. Be careful out there - the weather doesn't look great for Friday or Saturday this weekend with high winds and some rain/snow coming and thunderstorms possible. Sunday will probably be the best day unless the forecast changes.

Oh really, can you show me where you get your forecast from, I was looking and all I could really find was for the city nothing to do with the mountains. Was Friday day supposed to be ok it sounds like your saying Friday night, I know weather can do its on thing too though but I don't plan on being out there more then 6 hours.

Thanks

It looks like most the rain for tomorrow is expected later in the day, thank you guys for those I now i know where to look. I think I am going to go out bright and early and if the weather turns sour Ill just turn back. I got a bunch of fancy new gear to test out so I am excited!

I agree with you. I'm going to head out early tomorrow too. I might end up down just a bit south of Spitler as I have my eye on Butterfly Peak and Ken Point, but I might end up on Baldy instead.

When you say Baldy do you mean the Antonio or the smaller one down in the Divide?

Bigwookie: How did your climb up Spitler go? I ended up north of you - I slept too late to make the drive down to give Ken Point and Butterfly a try and I remembered how beautiful Tahquitz Peak was when we did it in the snow before; so I headed in that direction. I was referring to Mount San Antonio as my other option - it's a fun winter climb, but I just didn't feel like going up there when I got up yesterday.
