Thanks for the pics and info Florian...looks like a great spot that reminds me of Carey's Castle. Its amazing how long these old homesteads withstand the test of time in the desert. Though it sure helps to have a few stewards with a helicopter to assist in the housekeeping

Reading log book entries at the cabin it seems many people hike over from Indian Spring off of the West Fork trail.

I'd like to try this next time although I do like the Indian sites on the way we went.

I updated the original post with a link to pictures and trip report.

If you were not using Tinaballina, "Madwoman" might just be the next best thing to call you  but we will find a spot out there that resembles you :D

Actually, the name is Mad WOMEN (plural) I guess because madness is contagious.

Thanks for the kml file, Florian. It's hike #66 on my to-do list.
Hal, can you please tell me again the story behind Mad Women Spring? I remember you telling it in one of your posts a few months back and I can't find it.

edit: And the story on that shack also. Thanks.

The story I got is that the shack was built by the Wellmans. It is one of three shacks are about the same elevation on the East side of the Desert Divide. These shacks are all near springs. I have been to the cabin near Oak Canyon a few times. It's a great location and there's an Indian trail that goes west from it. The other one is supposed to be at Aqua Fuerte Spring but I've never been to it. Maybe that'll be my adventure. :D

The spring got its name because two women who were with Frank Wellman on the trip to the spring just couldn't get along. It was given that name by him in their honor.

At least that's what I heard.

Wow. There are three shacks!? Thank you, Hal. I enjoy reading trails' history and these artifacts really enhance the experience.

I look forward to reading your hike to Aqua Fuerte Spring in your blog :)

It'll probably have to wait a couple weeks. This week doesn't look like it'll be good exploration weather although I do enjoy hiking in the rain. Also, I will be wearing long pants on that trip. My legs got shredded on the last one and Florian got poison oak. From the map it looks like the shack is about a mile off the trail through some nasty stuff. I can't see anything on Google Earth but the other shacks don't really show up either.

I certainly did! The back of my right leg is ugly right now with oozing rashes. Not nice. Picture here .. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fboyd/4278979925/

Anyone have any miracle cures for poison oak rashes? I'll pay you money fot it!
