San Jacinto Conditions 1/9/10

Howdy All :)

Kathryn and I, Lilbitmo and friends, and Norris and his brother caught the first tram up yesterday. Lilbitmo was headed to San J and Folly Peak. In the boarding area, I met John and Joe, who asked about trail and snow conditions as they did not have crampons or ice axes. They've both had experience in ice and snow and promised they would turn around when safety required. We invited them to join us. After getting our permits, we headed up the Sid Davis drainage to Tamarack. We passed a tent in Tamarack (was that you, Audra?) and made our way up to the Miller Saddle. The snow was much softer than last Sunday and there was little to no ice. Kathryn and I had on our microspikes -- the guys were able to gain good purchase with boots.

At the base of the saddle, it was clear that the snow was melting -- manzanita was poking through numerous sections. We discussed our options at this point -- climbing is easier/safer than descending -- and we did not want to get into trouble coming down. Kathryn and I loaned the guys our microspikes, we donned our crampons, and the four of us made our way carefully up, continually assessing the quality of the snow and a possible turn around point due to ice. We sank in and dropped through the snow as we climbed, which meant that the summit was a go as the descent would be safe.

Once at the saddle, we post-holed our way up the summit and kept knocking snow off the crampons and microspikes. The snow at the summit had melted signficantly -- more rock was visible and in a few places we could post-hole up to our knees. Our new friends John and Joe were dazzled by the view from the summit (IMO -- best view of three saints). They whipped out a stove and cooked up cup of soups. Patrick arrived as we had lunch (balmy with no wind) and we took the requisite summit photos.

As we plunge-stepped our way down to Miller saddle, I wished that I had snow shoes -- skiers would have loved that ride. Once at the saddle, we glissaded our way down. The snow had softened up even more, so it was easy to self arrest with our elbows and poles. Periodically we had to stand up and walk around the exposed manzanita. Made our way back to Sid Davis and up the concrete to celebrate John and Joe's first San J ascent with the ritual Fat Tire beer at the tram bar. On the way back, I learned that John and Joe are members of Kathy Wings' peak-bagging group -- the world really is a small place 8)

Now we just need some new snow...

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

San J and Folly Peak

Postby lilbitmo » Sun Jan 10, 2010 2:30 pm

Wanted to get back and see San J on a nice day in winter conditions as the last time out a month ago we were hit with 40+ winds and white out conditions and settled for Harvard Peak instead of San J.

Bryan, Scott and I got to the tram just as the last call came for the first tram up. We gladly ran into Kathrine, Ellen, Norris, Norris's brother (cannot recall his name, sorry), and Ellen quickly introduced us to John and Joe. Everyone headed over to the Ranger Station and grabbed there permits. The three of us headed out first, followed closely by Ellen, Kathrine, John and Joe. Norris and his brother were behind them.

Everyone took the Sid Davis drainage up as the path to follow there is a "Super Highway" these days - cannot miss it, it's well worn.
At the upper end of the drainage we choose to go to the west end of Round Valley and skirt left of Tamarack so we could make our own track up the west side of the bowl/slope leading to the Miller/San J saddle. At the base of that we threw on our "crampons" and within 25 minutes I was able to make it up past the hut and was just approaching the summit when I heard the "valiant" shouts of Ellen's group that had just made the summit - it brought a smile to my face as I had heard the two guys talking to Ellen earlier about this being there first time up (San J they had done other summits in winter) and we all can relate to the first summit in winter on any summit, it's a good feeling.

Everyone chatted about other fun hikes, took all the pictures that go with the summit and by that time Bryan and Scott came up, they had run into problems with Scott's crampons and I offered to everyone a chance to join me for a "juant" over to Folly Peak, no takers so I headed over on my own. The conditions were "tri-fold", icy between some of the rocks, post holing between others and sloppy slushy loose snow on top of ice in others. Within a short time I was standing on Folly's not so significant summit but was glad I had done it because it was one of those little peaks in the back of my mind that I kept putting off and had finaly made myself go touch it.

By the time I had returnd to the summit of San J, Norris and his brother had come up, Ellen's group had gone down and Bryan and Scott were tired of waiting on me to return so they saw me just below the summit of San J and they headed down.

I wanted to do my own thing again so I made my way over to the Miller/San J saddle and went directly down the face of that slope. It was difficult in some areas as "post holing" was unavoidable as more of the shrubs were sticking out and the mid-day sun was blazing - it's melting fast out there. I then went directly through the trees keeping the "Sid Davis Trail" to my left and Tamarack Valler to my right and eventually on the other side of Cornell I picked up the trail again (I prefer the cross country stuff on my downhill winter fun). Back near the tram you cannot miss the rumble of all the "Touristas", went up the concrete to find Bryan and Scott waiting, went up to the bar looking for Ellen and Kathrine but I somehow missed them (sorry). All and all a great day in San Jacinto State Park - if you are thinking of going don't wait to long the snow is melting fast.

Finally got a summit picture on San Jacinto with Ellen after I missed meeting her there in Feb 2008 Image
