The ten essentials survey

General Palm Springs area.

Ohhhh! That leg snappy thing! Now I'm with you! I'm lacking a source for vicodin, but any kind of mind and body deadening at that point would be well worth the weight!

Phydeux, the categories probably make more sense, as the "essentials" seem like they'll vary by season. I don't need sunblock in the winter, but sunglasses on a brilliant snowy slope in full sun are not really optional. Good thinking there.

Your first aid kit should contain a small bottle of hand sanitizer, which can also be used to start a fire. Always try out new things in civilization first though, you don't want to get into trouble without the right amount of experience in lighting fires.

Rush doesn't deal in that wussy Vicodin. It's Oxycontin for the Drugster.

I carry the 10 essentials, and other items as well, depending upon the hike/conditions.

I view them as a starting point, not the end point.

Actually, I'm afraid you're both misinformed. I believe Mr. Limbaugh prefers to consume his chemical additives rather than sell them. I don't pass judgment on him though. I recently had minor surgery, where they put me in a "twilight" state. I can't remember the name of the medication, but I can tell you, I'm not afraid of surgery any more! I was brilliant, and charming, and funny...well that's how I remember it. My wife opts only for funny. In any case, there's a very good reason they keep that stuff under lock and key, and oxycontin is supposed to be one of the most dangerous. As all the hikin' fools here know, the trails are a much safer form of diversion.

Do you mean on long hikes only, or almost every hike?
