Snowing on the Skyline

Hope no one is up the Skyline right now. It's raining and/or snowing up there this morning!

I'm glad I've been tracking the weather. This time yesterday I was considering going up today - I'd be somewhere above Flat Rock by now! It's presently raining quite heavily in downtown Palm Springs.

Howdy All,

I went up Skyline yesterday with Steve (Bluerail) and Fern to expend some calories after Thanksgiving dinner. Started at 6:30, was warm by 7 and went through 3 liters by Long Valley. The guys were mellow (thanks guys) and took pity on me so I had company the whole way up. Broke 5 hours for the second time -- I felt much better when I went under 5 the week before the Terrible Two.

I've hiked Skyline when it started raining on the Never Ending Ridge and snowing above Flat Rock. Had the proper clothing, so it was actually pretty fun. I've also hit a foot plus of fresh snow at the traverse -- that one wasn't so fun. Found out a year later that a group behind us was grateful for our foot prints in the snow.

Several of us are planning to go up tomorrow -- who's on?

Miles of smiles,
Ellen

Snow? with the right gear it sounds FUN to me! :D i once was on the switchbacks when it started to snow heavily and it was magical. i will never forget everything going from green to white.

have fun tomorrow Ellen et al.

to avoid the 210 commute home on the final day of a 4-day weekend i am heading up to the southern Sierra. (pretty much same drive time for me as Skyline but with less traffic.) looks like we'll have some new snow there too. cool!

The snow that was at 4300' didn't last. Slow level looks more like 6500' now.

But the drizzle continues as of right now. NWS is calling it 50% chance of snow right now, 50% tonight and 20% tomorrow. The high temp for 8,000ft is expected to be about 38º. Carefull with the ice and bring a thermal layer just in case.

Howdy All :)

We had several inches of snow right before Flat Rock. The depth on the traverse was generally no more than 4 to 6 inches.

My concern is that the snow will melt and re-freeze, creating icy, dangerous conditions on the traverse.
