Posted 10/09/09: From Hwy 74 north the trail is easy to follow however there are several places with major sluff off and where plants have overgrown the trail. Water is available at Tahquitz Creek, Strawberry Cienaga, Deer Springs, and the San Jacinto River.
The trail from Fuller Ridge Trailhead to Snow Creek is in very poor condition and I felt like I was "bushwacking" with all the overgrowth.
I used a northbound gps track and reversed it to create a profile of the trail and computer "ran it" a couple different ways. The first 15 miles will be climbing less than 500ft of elevation over each mile of distance. That is the same rate you see on Skyline going from 4000' to 4500' which takes a mile. The 15 mile spot is where you reach trees, Black Mountain Campground and the start of Fuller Ridge Trail.
The last word I got was that the creek at LRV campground is dry. I don't have current info about the spigot at Black Mountain Campground.
Snow Creek barrier gate to the Tram is 26.8 miles if you don't go to the summit. If no other water source is available between the start (DWA has a water spigot about 1 mile in) and the LRV Campground you will have to cover 24.8 miles to reach the RV water pipe.
Remember, the trail below Fuller Ridge is overgrown and similar to bushwacking.
